There is a shim set into a shallow recess at the top of each lifter "bucket". The only way to know for sure if the noise is due to wear (not common with the B21/23/230) would be to remove the valve cover and check the clearance of each valve. If one or more are out of spec the choice is to remove the cam to gain access to the shims---or buy/borrow a tool that allows you to change shims with the cam in place. Removing the cam (of course that means disconnecting the timing belt too) will allow you to remove each "bucket" so the rubber "husher" underneath can be replaced. Your noise may just be the natural disintegration of one or more "hushers". They are not essential to the car running so if your valve clearances are good and you are satisfied the noise is a clicking/tapping valve noise you can elect to ignore the noise if you don't want to remove the cam. -- Dave
