i would not give up just yet.
several years ago i bought a car originally from new jersey, a 91 240 wagon with low mileage that had sat in a yard in northern vermont for 5 years after being taken up there from southern new jersey.
the car was choice in every way but would not start and no local mechanic could get it to run. the owner sold it to me for a few hundred dollars.
after hauling it back to massachusetts it took 20 minutes to find a bad crank sensor. after replacing that and the battery the car started up and ran great even with old gas.
never assume the worst with these cars. invariably you'll be wrong.
