Why retire it? The wifes 94 940t has close to 470k, and I would bet yours is in much better shape.
If the belt is still there, it really has to be the alt ( or the regulator). Apparently you have been driving mostly in the day, as the batt would go down quickly at night.
You can always do a check with a meter. Just search in youtube.
