Just a couple observations -- then I'll leave it to Phil and Dan.
The service light is unimportant. It is a reminder to change your oil based on mileage. In your 89, you need to reach up behind the instrument cluster and push the reset lever to stop the lamp from illuminating every time you start to drive.
The CEL is important. When it comes on, there are codes set which go to explain why it came on. Always. But, if by the time you get to the OBD to read the codes, and none are there, e.g. 111, then that almost always signifies a problem in the red wire where that 25A fuse is between the battery and the ECU. Literally, that intermittent connection is wiping your codes and resetting the ECU, resulting in idle troubles as the ECU re-learns what it lost.
In other words, this is not likely to be solved by swapping the parts, except by accident, so, if in the end you replace something and the trouble goes away, confirm by trying the replaced part and expecting the trouble to return. Only then will you be sure.

Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.
