Power steering fluid or ATF 200

What do you guys use in your power steering reservoir?
All my american cars I used to use Auto Trani fluid.
I hate to admit this but I never changed or even needed to add Fluid and now that I want to suck out the Fluid and add new, it's not good to do more harm than good by putting in something the Pump wont like.

Should crank buddy multi-task and crank the steering wheel lock to lock during the flush?

Yes it is good to steer all the way from lock to lock.

I do the following and I pretend I remove all the old fluid with very little loss.

-I turn the steering totally to right lock

-I siphon out all I can that is in the pump, I disconnect the return line and connect a tube that goes to a waste gallon jug, I plug the pump return inlet, then fill with new fluid to the very top

-I have someone starting the engine and at the same time turning the steering wheel to the other lock as fast as the pump can supply and I yell to stop the engine if I find I cannot refill the pump as fast as I should.

- Two full strokes will remove all old fluid left in steering rack. Then reconnect the return hose, bring to level and you are good for an other 80k miles before repeat.

This makes your steering rack last much longer. Also do not forget to unclip and push the left bellow. Then grease the pinion and tooted bar.

PS fluid and auto tranny fluid are the same thing. Type F.
Synthetic is good but not as important in the PS pump as in the tranny.

Install a Magnefine filter in the pump return line to catch metal particles and extend the life of both pump and rack. Easy to do.

Read the owner manual for lube type .... 200

.... says 'Type F' for the power steering fluid.

Dexron 3 (and newer, Dexron is apparently backward compatible) for the AW-7x.

Or we can say compatible synthetic for either.

Put Dexron in that power steering pump, and you'll ruin it as I did mine. 'Cause the damn Haynes 240 manual (I lost the Bentley, and did not read the owner manual) says Dexron in the power steering pump, stupid me.

As for the M-series manual gear boxes on a rear wheel drive Volvo, if you mean that by transmission ... Well, that's an entirely different matter. Neither of these would would desirable. Though, in a pinch, you can get away with genuine 'Type F, F/G, or G' for the later M46 and M47.

Yet yet Redline MTL, or the Volvo spec gear lube is the choice. Though I'd seen some mechanics put synthetic 30W into high mileage M47s.

I have the Ansoil synthetic Super Shift Racing Transmission Fluid ARTQT-EA SAE 10W in two M47 IIs. As it is synthetic, it is 'Type F' and Allison C-4 compatible, so says the copy. Allison C-4 uses a friction modifier, so it is slippery. Though synthetic lubricants can possess many properties and still comply to the lube spec of a device faultlessly. Or we hope.

I also use it as power steering fluid in the one 240 with power steering.

Yeah, I don't do too much racing with gearbox racing fluid in the St Loogey, Misery flea-riddled suburban slums in the owld, rotting 240. Rots as no garage.

Autozone here had it on the shelf yesterday. I've pulled the 5.0L out of mine and put an LS3 in. So 20 years later I'm back to a ZF rack and a Saginaw pump - the same config that called for Type F by Volvo when the car was new in 82.

On the shelf at Autozone here as we speak.....about to refill my system. Pulled the 5.0L out of mine and put an LS3 in. So I'm back to a Saginaw pump and a ZF rack - exactly the same config that called for Type F by Volvo.

This - Type F and a filter. And I baster out the reservoir every couple of years, fill, drive around the block, baster out again and refill. Doesn't get it all out....but does show the PS fluid some love.

Hi Tony,

Just a little over 55,000 miles using Mobile1 Synthetic Transmission fluid. It's good so far. No leak...

As always, thank you.

+1 on the Mobil 1 synthetic

251k on 95 855. Changed tranny and PS fluid to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF upon purchase at 161k. Still has original PS pump, rack and, most importantly, transmission.
