Trouble clearing SRS Airbag Code 5 from 240 Classic 200 1993

Hi. Any advice on dealing with a "code 5" on the SRS system?

I've gone through the clearing proceedure many times. The light will go out briefly, but come back - indicating that the error is still present. As I understand it, code 5 means that there is a poor connection (low resistance) going to the steering wheel.

I have also disconnected the battery overnight in the hopes of clearing the system, but the error remains.

Any typical things to check for this error?

This is a 1993 240 Classic wagon with standard shift. Less than 100k on the odometer.

This was in the faq's

A common problem is corrosion of the contacts on the yellow or orange power connector for the crash sensor under the carpet on the transmission tunnel. If the procedure to reset the fault codes doesn't work, make sure the contacts are clean and then try to clear the codes again. If the SRS light comes back on, the problem is probably another component or even low battery voltage. Faults must be cleared for the light to go out.

Could someone tell us exactly where that connector is and best way to get at it? ie remove seats,etc.

Connector is under the carpet parallel to the driver’s side piece of the center console. Maybe 2-3” away from the console side if memory serves correctly. It is easy to peel back carpet there. No need to remove seat.

Forgot to mention it is also a good idea to put the battery cable connectors in plastic bags to better isolate them and prevent dangerous sparks etc.

Yes, sounds like a clockspring issue. Had a similar problem with my 90 240. Have you done any work in and around the steering wheel?

Thanks all. No, this did not coincide with any work. The light just came on one morning as I was pulling out. I was turning the wheel, so maybe the clockspring just gave at that moment?

Before digging into the clockspring, I'll check the connections first. I know that there is a connection along the center console. Is there one behind the steering wheel that I should examine?

Don't remember if there is a connection behind the steering wheel. It was a long time ago. I imagine there is one to the clock spring there.

Please be safe, before working in the clock spring area disconnect the orange connector you mentioned on the floor and also the disconnect the battery cables for at least a 1/2 hour before starting work on any area related to the airbag.

Resistance between the SRS module and the airbag is high. So, likely a clock spring issue or at any connection between the SRS module and the air bag.

You may need to replace the clockspring in the steering wheel. Not a difficult job. You need to disconnect the battery, then the airbag module can be removed by removing two T20 or T25 fasteners accessed through the back of the steering wheel.
