failing fuel pessure regulator ? 200 1992

My '92 245 is hard to start. It cranks fine and kind of tries but won't run unless I open the throttle about half way. After that it runs fine. Starting is still a little off but when it is warm it starts without any help.

I have a fuel pressure gauge with an adapter for the schrader valve that Volvo thoughtfully installed in the fuel line. Unfortunately they put it under the fuel rail just about exactly in line with an intake manifold stud. I can not bend the line from the gauge short enough to get it on the fitting.

The vacuum line is not wet but does smell a little like fuel. I'm pretty sure I need a new FPR. The part is ~$175 so I'm reluctant to do a lot of trouble shooting by parts replacement. Twisting the rail looks like it will certainly snap off the front injectors. Any ideas on how to get the gauge connected ?

Thanks

Greg

I bought the Harbor freights 20 dollar test kit. The gauge was bad out of the box, but the flexible hose fits, and I connected the other end to the hose on my HVAC gauges. Worked great.
Dont know where else you can find a hose with the smaller screw on fitting.

"Unfortunately they put it under the fuel rail just about exactly in line with an intake manifold stud."

    Hi Greg,

This is indeed a frustrating placement. I'm sure safety was somehow involved in the decision.

If you search for schrader adapters you'll find right angle fittings for truckers. I've never needed one, because I already have made an adapter to fit the rail to hose fitting one requires before the 1992 rail got the test port.

Here's a post by someone who actually did get one: https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1590312/940/960/980/V90/S90/adapter_fuel_rail_schrader_valve.html

Wow, up to $175 now? Yikes. Used to be $40.

My experience when the FPR fails is
1 Poor mileage as the gas is getting sucked into the intake vacuum line.
2 First start of the day takes awhile as the pressure is not being held up.
3 If you smell fuel in the vacuum line its time to replace it.

The Bosch replacements do not last as long as the original Bosch ones did which was about 15 yrs or so. I am on my 3rd one on my 88 and I think its starting to go as my first start of the day takes a bit longer than usual and its about 7 yrs old now.

Purchased from FCP and its under warranty.

So true Art. If you have to hold your foot down on the gas pedal to start a FI car you know you've got a problem.

Flooding in FI cars 200 1992

Another common cause is a dribbling (leaky) injector or two.

"First start of the day takes awhile as the pressure is not being held up."

It takes a while because the fuel leaking past the diaphragm has flooded the engine. Hold the throttle completely open to start.

I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel.
