240 electronic speedo removal with ANTI-TAMPER Connection 200 1993

I am trying to remove an Instrument cluster 1993 Volvo 240 Classic
Pretty strait forward BUT - how do I detach the cable on the Speedo Head - it does not want to release - is there a 'tab' or release pin? Don't want to damage it

Thanks a lot

The clip is made to be evident you took it off. It was rare to find one still intact even 20 years ago, and once, when I did (in a junkyard) I played with my yard tools and ample patience to see if I could do it, just to be able to describe it for you. Couldn't "pull it off."

There are hundreds of 240s driving around with smoothly working instrument clusters without the tamper-evident clip in place, but once it becomes intermittent for whatever reason, the first suspect is loose pins on the card-edge connector.

If anyone knows where you can get replacements, it would be planetman. Wait for his response if you break it.

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!

Thanks Art. So you just pinch and pull towards the midline of the car? Twist/lift or anything like that?

Mike

I just want to remove the entire unit so I can work on it on a bench and not from beingd - the IPD videos show it being removed but they skip the cable portion

The connector for the speedometer is a 2 piece affair. There is the electrical connector and a plastic retainer.

It is not uncommon to break the retainer while removing it and I have new retainers in stock.

Hi Mike,

I dug up an old picture showing the retainer clip pushed on a gauge without the electrical plug, in an attempt to show how its fragile tangs mate with the square holes in the speedometer circuit board. It is white on white, so it is hard to make out here without some physical context, but the idea is to release the tangs (simultaneously) where they lock into the square holes.

Here's a photo showing the square holes in the board.

I have done 3 of these (clearly an amateur by speedo repair standards) and have not even encountered the security clip as it was gone due to prior repair.

I was able to push in the connector without any issues after swapping the gear and drive for many, many miles.

I think the concern here is when and if the connector wiggles free?
