Same experience, though on our first Volvo, an 83 DL. The rotor has a resistor in it -- new ones measure about one thousand ohms, but my kid's car wouldn't start with one that measured infinite. Too much of an air gap inside there, I guess.
I remember it fondly, being over 20 years ago, and being able to pat myself on the back for being able to grab one from our newly acquired second Volvo, an 84 DL, to rescue the car from her high school friend's driveway two blocks away. I was convinced then and there, our cars would all have interchangeable parts.
Isn't anyone curious why OP thinks Bentley "says ECU?"
