M46 White Block to Red Block 200 1981

Will a M46 from a white block 240 mount up to a red block 240? Would the flywheel and clutch also be the same?

In Volvo circles "white block" refers to 4, 5, and 6 cylinder all aluminum engines found in the newer cars starting with the 960 (6cyl), then 850/S70/V70 (5cyl), S/V40 (4cyl), and so on.

Bolting pattern is different than the red-block; no bellhousing exists to mate an M46 to a white block. White block cars are all either front wheel drive or (in the US market) automatics. The rare and elusive M90 manual transmission was put into late red block cars and the white block 960 but was never offered in the US market.

I'm not sure what you mean by "white block 240". The M46 will transfer from any B21, B23 or B230 as a bolt-on --- with some differences in the flywheel for models with flywheel triggered ignition. An M46 as fitted to the V6 B27 or B28 and in-line 6 cyl Diesel are different in the bell housing and the flywheel. - Dave

Thanks. I was able to find Volvo-240-260-1979-1984-parts-catalog.pdf that listed only 3 bell housings, 4,6 cyl gas and diesel. Somehow I had the impression that there was a bolt pattern change in the 4 cyl aluminum blocks. I have been dreaming of putting in a manual trans into my '81 B21F originally AW55 but installed an AW70 about 20 years ago. Love the OD. Seems like the most practical way is to buy a running manual car, exchange all the bits, and then sell the donor as a running automatic.

Will R explained where the confusion lay. I have your solution to make an M46 240. I have just retired the 1980 245 that I've been driving since 2000. It is an M46 car and it all works. There are a few things I plan on keeping from it--the four round headlight system & grille, the HD tow hitch, maybe the rear seat, the battery and the Turbo steering wheel. The car still runs - the B21F runs great--the K-jet FI works. The car got retired due to severe rust and a seeping fuel pump and the need for new exhaust. I'd sell the entire rolling car -- or just the M46 related parts for a conversion. You can do the grunt work and save. I'll use the shell as a storage container if the body remains with me. I finally have my '93 245 with its Oldsmobile all aluminum 215 V8 back on the road--now with a Camaro 5-speed so it doesn't hurt much to move on from the '80.
