244 '81 steering horns buttons not 'pushing' enough 200 1981

15 or more years ago my dad had to repair horns buttons because they didn't "push" anymore enough to activate horns.
I Remember we put somewhat thickness items under the buttons to make them nearest ti the buttons itself.
Now Is time to check them again... Of I Press hard on the exact point they work, orherwise not.not the best way to operate when in traffic.
but I don't Remember how to remove the buttons on the wheel, id there are screws or other stuff.

There Is some guides of reference about?
Is that a common problem?

ANSWER 244 '81 steering horns buttons not 'pushing' enough 200 1981

Solved!

disassembly was actually simple, all you had to do was lever with a screwdriver, being careful not to overdo it with force.

the problem is, obviously, that the circuit that closes no longer makes contact. opening it I remembered that it was a system as brilliant as it was stupid XD

the plastic "foot" of the button tends to become thinner over time and the contact of the two metal plates wears out and becomes punctured, perhaps because it causes some sparks or something... I don't know because in any case you don't spend your days playing the horn. especially with a car like this that has done 3000km in 10 years -.-

the fact is that the plastic feet had already been modified by adding a screw that makes them adjustable, I cleaned the contacts and gave the screw a quarter turn. perfect, sensitive at the first touch.

I don't rule out that in 15 years :p I will add a drop of tin in the "holes" that were created in contact, so as to restore the original thickness.

Thanks all for the suggestions to remove!

Right, Kitty, and if you add WIDTH=500 after the SRC= parameter then the image will be scaled to fit a typical reply here without large images causing an overflow of the whole reply and thread display offscreen to the right (or use some number of pixels close to 500 like 350-600), eg. using the HTML

<img src=http://www.site.com/image.jpeg width=500>

Hi, I see you are new to the Brickboard welcome aboard.

I have been a 240 man since 1978GT that was our first passenger car.
I have only seen that wheel on rare occasions in the JY.

I believe that the wheel is larger is overall size or diameter than steering wheel before and after your year.
I’m guessing that some cars came without the power steering option or even air conditioning.
Sweden is a cooler place with is mountains and moose.

So it was the standard wheel used on sedans until about 1986.
I got my 1984 way after the 1986 wagon and learning this was unintentionally backwards for me. Sometimes I think it’s my Method Of Operation by nature.

Nowadays they use a big horn pad in the center. Not everyone drives with both hands on the wheel @ the 2&4 o’clock positions.
My station wagon came with the smaller wheel that was standard on my GT.
The 1984’s bigger wheel made me feel like I was driving an old 1954 Dodge or something.

Your photo jogged my memory and I went and found It.
I kept the other one so the car will be as original if a future owner wants to make it so.
My 1984 still has beauty rings and center hubs for the tire rims too.
It’s easy to spot it like my GT “HAD” stripes that definitely dated the car.
When the clear coat up and flaked off, so, did the stripes.
The car was a long ways from being a race vehicle.

From looking at the wheel and knowing how they pull off like the center pad does.
It’s my guess is the button will pull loose by using a flat type hook arrangement from around under the sides.
The center pad, as I remember clips on to the insides of the springs.
I do not see screws in the backside to release anything from the front.
I would pry with anything that put a narrow edge of force onto an edge of plastic of this age.
No one knows how much sun or hand lotion, has gotten onto the buttons.
Something as wide as a popsicle stick but a lot thinner should be able to sneak down in there and feel posts. You want to be as near to them as you can feel out.
It doesn’t take much to hold the buttons on, as any effort to use them, is inwards to blow the horn.

I imagine the center Volvo emblem just pops in as well.

Good luck with working up a fix. Post back what you found to be the problem that DAD fixed.

Phil

Hi!
Our car was bought new by my father here in Italy, MY 1981.
That car wasn't originally meant for the Italian market as my parents Remember.
Came with that grey interiors and the possibility to have Power steering or manual sunroof.
Dad opted for sunroof. So no Power steering and no AC.
Car Is quite "new" and Always garaged, so the plastic are still in good shape. I'll try to pry them out from the top and see how that buttons are made and of they can be modified again. Hope i can do It on these holidays, I'll let you know.
Thanks!

HF sells a kit for a few bucks that consists of a set of plastic pry bars of various widths and angles - they're especially good for prying the side trim off without breaking the attaching clips. I don't know about the buttons not going far enough but I do know that the horns need good connections throughout to work properly. Personally I prefer the wheel supplied with the 240 Turbo - smaller in diameter and thicker in section. When I put my '93 245 V8 conversion on the road that's the wheel it got. - Dave
