diesel head 200 1985

I WAS SPEAKING TO AN AUTOMOTIVE "EXPERT" WHO WAS TELLING ME THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER TO USE THE HEAD FROM A DIESEL VOLVO RATHER THAN THE B23FT HEAD I PLAN TO USE ON MY 85' 240 TURBO. IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO WHAT HE SAYS OR IS HE FULL OF IT. HE HAS SOME KNOWLEDGE HAVING SUCCESSFULLY FITTED A TURBO ONTO AN AUSTIN MINI (275 CRANK HORSEPOWER ON THE DYNO RUNNING 11 PSI OF BOOST) BUT I STILL THINK THE B23FT HEAD IS MUCH BETTER. ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPREICIATED.

THANKS JUNIOR

Re: diesel head 200 1985

He's no expert. He's full of it. The diesel head will not fit. At 8 psi of boost, the B230FT in a 740T produces 160 hp. If you figure about 7 HP per psi of boost, that's 21 extra HP for about 181 hp. The B230FT has a compression ratio of about 8.5:1. Your friend with the boosted Mini would have to be running a very high compression ratio to get 275 hp and would be in danger of detonation without adding a tremendous amount of fuel. Anything over 15psi on an engine designed for a turbo requires extra fuel.

Switch over to

Turbobricks as there is a lot of good info there.

Also click over to

Gus Mahon for lots of good high perf turbo info, including the G-valve.

BTW, please turn off your caps lock.

Thanks...

Re: diesel head 200 1985

Even if it would fit (which it won't), in principle it is a bad

idea because you need a LOWER compression ratio with boost

and a diesel has a LOT HIGHER compression ratio.

Re: diesel head 200 1985

The Volvo rwd diesel motors were made by Volkswagen, a 6 cylinder version of the basic Rabbit/Golf/Jetta diesel. There is no way any parts will interchange with a gasburner Volvo (except external accessories like alternators and power steering pumpts).

Re: diesel head 200 1985

Sorry about the "CAPS" guys. This piece of s#$t keyboard of mine finally crapped out on me. I got a new one and all is well. As for the expert, I showed him all the responses to my question and he was "at a loss for words". Oh well thanks for setting me/him straight on this issue. Oh yeah one more quick thing. I am thinking of relocating the radio higher on the dash (less likely to rear-end someone this way). Has anyone attempted this and what is involved. As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

note: That 275 hp mini actually has 175 hp. He runs 94 octane gas with 3 cans of 104 octane booster at each fill-up. (not really important but just wanted to clarify that)

Thanks a bunch guys, and all the best for the New Year!!!

Sincerely,

Junior Baptiste
