Can someone tell me what car this is? 200

My Aunt had this really cool Maroon colored 2 something wagon. From doing some research I believe it may have been a 242. I do not remember the year, but it had four square headlights and these 4 or 5 spoke grey wheels. I do not know if it was a turbo but it was a Auto. I just want to know where I can find such a car and how much would they be. Also where would I be able to find a pic of this car. Please email me or post here. Thanks, Evan...

Re: Can someone tell me what car this is? 200

The car you're describing is a 240 turbo wagon, also known as a 245 (as mentioned below, the last number tells how many doors, either 2, 4, or 5). The 15"x6" 5-spoke silver/grey wheels were standard on the turbo models, which were made from '81-'85, all of which would have had the 4 rectangular headlights.

Here are some links to pictures of Volvo 240 wagons, mostly modified because that's what I tend to save:

245 Turbo burn out

White 245 Turbo

Lowered and heavily modified blue 245

Silver 245 Turbo

Blue 245 Turbo

Black 245 Turbo

Dark red 245 Turbo

Red 245

240 Turbo Wheels

European 265

You could probably buy a 240 turbo for $500-$3000+ depending on the mileage, condition of the car (paint, rust, interior), and the turbo (whether or not it's watercooled, whether or not there is an intercooler, and the mileage on the turbo). The purchase price will will also reflect how much additional money will be needed to get the car back into good condition. Things like shocks, bushings, cooling system, tires, and exhaust will probably need work in some degree just because the car is at least 15 years old. The most important things to look for are rust and a bad wiring harness, both of which were common on pre-'86 Volvo 240s.

Good luck.

Re: Can someone tell me what car this is? 200

As the other poster said, if it was a wagon, it wasn't a 242 but a 245. And if it had the quad rectangular headlights (very popular) it was pre 1986, if it had a Turbo it was from 81 to 85.

Pictures can be found on my website below of my 81 vintage 242 Turbo, so if hers looked similar but in a wagon form then it was an 1981-85 245 Turbo. Just click on the funny neon like picture on the far left to get the the picture of my car, and the one on the far right to see other Volvo's. Should help you see which ones hers could have been.

Good luck in finding a nice one, there are quite a few around. There are a few lists around of what to look for in a used 240 Turbo, search the archives of this site. Mine cost me about $3000 to buy and get running, but I think I'm a little on the high side.

Re: Can someone tell me what car this is? 200

The first 2 in the number system refers to the series, the second number refers to the number of cylinders and the third number refers to the number of doors (with some exceptions). If it was a turbo the number would be followed by a "T" or the full word "Turbo". So what you were probably looking at was a 245 Turbo wagon ( I am assuming that it was a turbo because of the five spoke mags which were only standard on GT's, GLT's and Turbo sedans and wagons. These are the facts as I understand them if I am wrong I am sure someone will set the record straight! Good hunting.

In 1981 Volvo also had GLT package on the wagons but it was a GL with black trim, 5 Spoke alloys and NO TURBO. The car your aunt had is a 245GLT.
