Calipers are loose 700 1986

My dear mother's `86 760 started making a rattle in the front left wheel area. It doesn't rattle quite so bad when the brakes are applied. I popped the wheel off and tested everything for looseness, and the only thing that budged was the brake caliper.

The housing (?) (the part that bolts onto the wheel assembly) was solid, but the floating caliper was moving. It's supposed to slide left-right, but it's not supposed to wiggle front-back. The bolts holding the sliding part in seem solid. So how do I tighten it? Or do I just have to get a new caliber assembly?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Re: Calipers are loose 700 1986

A few years back my '83 760 had the same clunking as yours, but on both sides. I couldn't find dimensions of the caliper pins or of the caliper mounting brackets in able to check which was bad. I ended up at the local volvo dealer trying to buy a new set of pins and was told they were not available individually, only with a caliper/mounting bracket assembly. I was tired of listening to the clunking so the new assemblies were installed at considerable expense. You might want to check out a "u-pick it" type auto recycler and see if there is a set of tight caliper mounting brackets available. I live just north of Chicago, IL and have been unable to locate any these local yards that stock any amount of 700 series Volvos.

Anyone know of any in the northern Illinois region?

I had the same rattling brake noise as you. I was able to source a caliper bolt "repair" kit at the dealer for my 740. Beechmont Volvo (Cincinnati)513-388-3840. I replaced those and also discovered the springs on the pads were broken. Replaced all and no more noise.

Good Luck, call Beechmont. They honor VCOA discount also.
