Automatic Locking Differential 900 1991

I am looking for help identifying an Automatic Locking Differential from a 1991 940 SE W/B230 Turbo. From what I have read on the Brickboard, this car came with an ALD. The number 1045 identifying this should be somewhere on the left side of the housing.

I have located a '91 940 SE with 80k mi. at a salvage yard across the country from me.

They have been good enough to pull the unit to confirm the id #s, but cannot find anything with 1045 in it. But there are many other #s on the unit and on the sub frame assy. .

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? Any Volvo parts counter guys out there?

Re: Automatic Locking Differential 900 1991

My recollection is that the axle number is 1041. Not sure what you look for. As I understand, these did not come out until 1992. Before that, the option was a standard LSD. Rarely fitted to Turbo models (not recommended by Volvo). But occasionally, since it was a dealer option rather than a factory only part.

Auto locking rears contain a torque overload protection device. Apply too much torque and it breaks and the rear becomes a standard open rear. Not sure what the overload level is. I am sure it can handle at least a Turbo Plus and probably much more.

You can also buy a Powertrax auto locking rear for about $400, and have it installed for about $250 more.

Re: Automatic Locking Differential 900 1991

I couldn't find the 1045 marked on the rear suspension of the 940SE rear I got either...only a label with the ratio, but it is the only type the car came with. The '91 also came with the rear anti-sway bar not present in 1990 and earlier. Did you get the whole IRS, or just the differential? It's easier to swing to whole shebang as one unit than to pull that stupid gear unit out.

Re: Automatic Locking Differential 900 1991

Thaks for the help Gene.

I'll be getting just the differential. They want too much money for the entire assy., plus the shipping charges added on......................
