Sweedish beauty needs help 200 86

Well,.. my car is a Sweedish beauty. 86' 240. the bulb fail indicator idiot light comes on when I hit the breaks & I also failed

inspection for left rear break power much less than right rear. I

suspected the proportioning valve (initially thought I saw the break fail idiot light & the proportioning valve can trigger the

break fail idiot light) but my parts guy says it only proportions from

front to rear (equal pressure applied to both rear breaks). This indicates a pinched line or stuck caliper. verified defference in

rear break pad material indicating uneven breaking. I then cleaned/greased the break pad pins (suspecting the pads might have been hanging up). The bulb fail light still comes on when I hit the breaks. Should i swap in a rebuild caliper ($85) or

change the proportioning

valve ($60)?? Observed in below posts isses re break fluid flushes & type. I use DOT 3.5 & never flushed (replaced a lot when I changed the Proportioning valve). any help?

If the bulb fail indicator (as opposed to the brake fail indicator) comes on, the first point I'ld check are the brake lights themselves. Replace both bulbs so you'll have bulbs of the same brand and age, clean connectors and contacts in the bulb holders, and check if the problem has gone.

Uneven braking is a different problem, but shouldn't light the bulb fail indicator. In case of leaks it might light the brake fail indicator, but that's only a pressure test. If the system's fluid-tight, no indicators should come on. LR brake could be stuck caliper, collapsed hose, failed proportioning valve (there are 2, one for each rear caliper due to triangular braking system) or bad brake line. Could even be a master cylinder or distribution block problem, as each circuit feeds both fronts and one rear.

      Hi Bram,

thanks, re the proportioning valve, I only see one. Two lines come off the Master cylinder & drop almost straight down to the Proportioning valve. The Proportioning valve has an electrical terminal (believe senses front to rear & may really only be a check on fluid leaks (front or rear)) and four lines. I think I traced the four lines going one to each caliper. Any more thoughts??

      P.S. I'll check the lights/grounds.

don't forget to clean the ground connector at both tail lights. Might just stop bulb indicator light.
