can i just unbolt the tank from the boot, and plug the filler hole??? 700 1988

Hey all,

I am in the process of installing a decent stereo system into my volvo (already has one, but the new one is bigger and better :o) ). Obviously the tank is empty....I was wondering about all the hoses coming off the tank in the boot (vent hoses), how does the main tank vent??? Does it vent through the secondary tank? If so, how do i hook it up so it vents? I live in Australia, i don't need the extra tank capacity (admittedly though, it is nice having it!! But the stereo is gonna (well, 2 pioneer 12" subs will be, and three amps!) be built behind the rear seat, using that valuble space, so i can reclaim my boot.....i was just wondering if removing the tank is as easy as saying it.....with regards to the venting/intake blocking....(there's a little pin switchy thingy behind the fuel guage in the dash to set the tank to 60litres, so thats easy).....I was just wondering, thinking of doing it really soon.....Carpet at the back of the boot is gonna be cut off, thats not really an issue.....Any help appreciated guys, thanks all :o)

I guess you have a spare tank in your car. In Australia, I guess the distance between two gas stations can be as far as 1,000 km apart. Hence the need for a spare tank.

First of all, check if you have a pump in the spare tank. If not, then verify that the bottom of the spare tank is connected to the main tank, and that there is a vent from the top of the spare to the main tank. Make a drawing of what you have.

If the above is true, then it is a matter of remove and plug.

If you have a more complicated system, then it will require more brain work.

(I used to do petrochemical refining and processing units. This is why I dare to give the opinion. However, I have never come across such a situation. In U.S., even when traveling in the desert, 50 km between gas stations is considered far apart. If you need further assistance, please communicate with me privately.)
