engine trouble; what is wrong with my car? 200 1990

I just replaced the air mass meter in my 1990 245 after having some trouble with the car...the check engine light was lit and the car would buck on the highway (or just about anywhere elses) and would stall every so often. The air mass meter seemed like the solution especially since my mechanic told me this was the problem. Since the installation of the new air mass meter, the check engine light does not go on anymore, but the car stalls every time the engine revs go down to idle...I have to rev the engine when starting it, if I put the clutch in while driving anywhere the engine speed will go down normally but the car will stall once the tach is in the 1000 rpm range. Another thing that I noticed is that the gas pedal isn't as responsive as normal, if I have it slightly depressed, so as to maintain my current speed on a local road, there is no response whatsoever, it has to be depressed more than normal for any response whatsoever.

Re: engine trouble; what is wrong with my car? 200 1990

Peter:

My daughter's '90 244 (with most of the same goodies as yours ) was experiencing some of these same symptoms. After ensuring that there were no vacuum leaks, that the throttle body was clean and the throttle position switch was making a definite audible "click" when the throttle was closed, I removed and serviced the idle air control motor according to the approved Don Foster technique (check the archives), cleaning it out using carb cleaner while cycling it with a 12V power supply, then oiling it with a few drops of clean motor oil on the commutator shaft. No more complaints from daughter.

It sounds a lot like the vacuum hose to the flame trap is loose or cracked.

Either that or the intake hose has a big crack in it somewhere. It sounds more like that than an idle air control problem, but that could be it too. Heck, check them all out.

Just talked to a guy whose car was dying at every toll gate and stoplight, but would run otherwise (not perfectly, but it ran). Finally the guy leaves for work one morning and the car takes a dump three blocks from his house.

The thing comes in on the hook, and the problem: Some quick-lube genius pulled the intake hose off to get the air filter out, then never tightened the hose clamp. Eventually the thing fell off when he hit a bump. Towing $50, repair $0.

Whatever is wrong is still there or you may have a couple of problems.

You need to troubleshoot and see that all the signals to/from the engine are proper. Not responding to the gas could be throttle position related.

You may have a flaky rpm sensor giving the engine a intermittent signal.

Try using the test mode of the diagnostics. If you don't have a Bentley

manual for your car it would be a good idea to purchase one. You may also

have a vacuum leak. That is a fairly common problem. Check all the vacuum

hoses that are attached to the intake manifold and spray throttle body

cleaner around the manifold gasket and injector seals. Figuring this

out may take some time because you need to check to see if its fuel

related or injection or ignition.
