Cruise Control 200 1984

I have found a wrecked 1981 245DL with cruise control, and was wondering if I can pull it out and put it in my 1984 240GL Manual. If so can anybody tell me what to do.

Thanks in advnce

Re: Cruise Control 200 1984

Hi,

I have just finished wiring my 940GLE, 1991, 16 valve (auto trans.) with cruise control. I've got hella brand cruise control unit in my car and it has 9 pin set up it works fine. But this is only a temporary measure as I am waiting for a 14 pin replacement cruise control unit from the dealer who sold me the stuffs (from US).

I don't know the set-up for 200 series but for 700 and 900 series the followings are the shoping lists:-

1) turn signal stalk with cruise ON/OFF/RESUME switch.

2) vacumm delete switch (for brake pedal)

3) another delete switch (for manual trans. only)

4) brackets to hold the delete switches

5) 9 pin cruise control unit (CRUISE ECU/ some calls it cruise relay)

6) Vacumm pump motor

7) 'T' shape vacumm connector

8) hoses from delete switch to 'T' shape, and from 'T' to servo

9) vacumm servo with mounting bracket

10) 3 grooves throttle spool

Make sure your car is pre-wired for cruise. If it is not, like mine, then you need to wire the parts yourself. If you need the wiring diagrams, I can e-mail it to you. The wiring is pretty much straight forward for 9 pin cruise unit. But the problem is how to determine the cruise unit is working. So a working cruise unit readly available (or you have access to it) might be a good idea.

I got into trouble because mine did not work (the 14 pin unit). Had a hard time to determine what went wrong. After complete wiring check it was the cruise unit that was out of order. Got a temporary 9 pin unit to confirm this. I got a lot of assistance from a lot of people from this board so with that experiance I think I can safely assist you in this.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cruise Control 200 1984

Matt -

T'aint easy but it can be done. You need to get absolutely everything out of the donor car. The speedometer cable hook-up may give you trouble. Remember the pulley on the throttle linkage, and the switches or valves on the brake and (if applicable) clutch pedals. Make a lot of notes about every component. Where is goes, what wires hook on, whether or not there seems to be a factory-made characteristic to it. Everything. Take pictures if possible.

The 1981 system is likely a vacuum-driven system. If so, there's a large diaphragm actuator that changes to throttle position. The rubber part of it goes out and is expensive - if you can find one at all.

It will be a lot of work.

Good Luck,

Bob

Hello.

I never knew that you could put cruise control into a manual car... maybe I should go hunt for a system too! (Lots of half-cut wrecks around here...and no one here wants cruise control...)

The pre-electronic cruise control would probably fit anything. The Volvo? Get the left stalk with the CC control in it, and the two-sheave pulley for the control cable, that cable pulls parallel with the cable from the foot pedal.

The speedo cable, I think, is special, with one section tranny to control unit, and other section on into cabin for instrument connection. The control unit mounts on the outside of the firewall below the wiper motor, at least that's where it was on my 1979 245 DL man trans.

I have seen some after-market universal units, too.

Go For It!!

Good Luck,

Bob

Re: Cruise Control 200 1984

The speed sensor wasn't complicated on a 1984 (Dana, older style) cc I once pulled out of a 240. Just an additional unit (coil), mounted in the back of the instrument cluster, in a fabricated space close to the wire. No strange speedo wires or other troublesome things. All the 1981-85 240 clusters seems to accept this sensor.

Re: Cruise Control 200 1984

yea, it was a heck of a lot of work pulling one from a 940 and sticking it in my 740, but one of the most worthwhile things i've ever done to any car. cruise control ROCKS!
