No Start Problem. I may be at the root cause BUT! Distributor (Rotor alignment question) 200 1979

I think I've found the no start problem with my car. The distributor rotor is not aligned properly. How do I align this? Not having a timing light I have always avoided distributor work completely but I need to get started to get to a mechanic, to save what bucks I can that is.

Any help will be gratly appreciated!

Thanks

Richard

Richard, If the car was running OK and then it just won’t start and the rotor is not lined up correctly. Maybe the timing belt is broke or jumped a few teeth. If the timing belt is OK. Get # 1 cylinder at TDC on it’s compression stroke, now loosen the distributor bolt and turn distributor on till rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire in the distributor cap, This will be close for the engine to start if all else or OK. Good luck

Thanks for the advice, I'm absolutely positive you hit the nail on the head there but I ran into another problem. I loosened the bracket on the distributor but it won't budge. I did the same on my parts car and it turns very easily. I'm thinking I'd like to replace the distributor completely since the parts car piece looks to be in much beter shape but I can't get the original out. I've let the stuck one soak with WD40 overnight but I'm wondering if I can give it a good rap to loosen it. Wil that disturb anything?

Thanks

Richard
