Timing Belt Tensioner 200 89

I'm trying to think, Can I replace the tensioner without taking everything apart? I'm trying to remember, can I take off the top cover without taking off any Belts, I think I can do it.

Thoughts.

I know I should have done it when I did the belt but there was no hint of bearing s getting tired.

Yes, you can remove that top cover and get at the tensioner. Use the TDC notch on the outside of the pully to time.

Curious, what are symptoms of that pulley going. I also did my belt without changing the pulley.

I wouldn't worry too much about not changing it. This will be the first time in 200000+ miles that I'm thinking about doing mine. It is just making a hint of a growl, I will by the tensioner and play it by ear, I may try to see if it will hold until next Belt changing period.

Yes.

"...can I take off the top cover without taking off any Belts..."

Ummm.... I think you'll still need to remove the fan, water pump pulley, and alternator belts.

When you pull back the tensioner and insert the locking pin, a good idea is to stuff a rag down alongside the t-belt to keep it pushed against the crank sprocket. This prevents it from disengaging with the teeth and skipping timing.

Torque on the tensioner nut is 37 lb.-ft.
