Converting crank windows to power? How dificult? 200 1979

I wnt to convert my crank windows on my 245 to power windows using the motors from my old 242. it will only be for the front windows of course but it would be fine and the power armrests would fully cover the areas on the1991 door panels just insalled. Is this a relitively eas job?

Thaks, Richard

Re: Converting crank windows to power? How dificult? 200 1979

I have all of the parts in my closet to do this swap, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I've heard from a few people who have done this, and everyone says is an easy swap. A few tips: install the wiring first so you can make sure the motors are working and you can move the regulator so that it is in the correct position for installation. If you don't have a helper, use duct tape to hold the window up when needed.

This might be helpful too:

Good luck.

Feel free to take notes and pictures, then you can post the info and I can decide if it would be worth it for me!

Re: Converting crank windows to power? How dificult? 200 1979

It will take some time, and a good bit of patience, but this job is definitely doable - with one possible complication in your case. Your 242 has a larger door, and hence a larger window, and therefore it probably has a different size regulator (that X-shaped device that pulls the glass down or pushes it up.) I'm not 100% sure about this, but someone else probably knows. The motor and all wiring should be perfectly compatible.

I plan to do this job on my 244 in the near future.

Hi Speed Racer

I was wodering about the diference in window size bt I'm hoping that since they're all the same heght that maybe it won't be a problem. I just wish I knew for sure before going through all that work.

Thanks

Richard

I disagree. It is a pretty easy and worthwhile upgrade. We did our two DL's for less than $100 each and a day of work. You need a cooperative pick and pull from which to extract the regulators and wire harnesses, arm rests and switches and a couple of extra little colored plastic stars. You should try to get a favorable price for the whole system. Your car is all set up for the swap and no mods are necessary. Taking the doors apart and following the harnesses will give you all the info you need for installation. Don't lose the single little silver relay behind the front center console. Definitely worthwhile.

common now people dont be lazy!,, you just have to reach down and turn a little knob about 4 or 5 times, if youre gonna put time into something put it into something that will increase youre performance. like a wise man once said,, if it aint broke dont fix it.

"if youre gonna put time into something put it into something that will increase youre performance."

Does stereo performance count? That's the reason why I plan to convert my DL to power windows, so I can fit a bigger speaker in the front door without dealing with the window crank interference. Right now I have some good Kenwood 4" speakers in the front doors, but they are just pathetic compared to the 5.25" Pioneer speakers in the rear deck, so I'm going to put the 5.25's in the front and put 6x9's in the rear deck. Better bass and hopefully better front/rear balance.

John -

I held the same opinion until I goat a brick with p/w. Never again will I settle for m/w. Greatest use is in controlling non-driver's windows. Both DS windows down about 4 inches give a swirl effect ventilation that clears out hot air and sometimes makes a/c un-needed. Also neat to be able to talk thru DS window to another brick owner.

Bob

Was he really wise? Or was he the one who was lazy?

I myself am both short of wisdom and and a compulsive gadget freak.

Bad combination!

Thanks! That's good to hear. I have motors and armrets but I gave the switches away with a car I sold. I'll play around with the spare doors I have to see how the fitting goes then I'll tackle the wagon. Luckily I have lt of spare parts to play with! Thanks for the tip on the relay in the console too. BTW, I just fitted the later model console with shelf in my 79, I'm qite happy with it,just had to share.

Thanks again

Richard

Re: Converting crank windows to power? How dificult? 200 1979

It might be easier to buy another car!!!

Really, there are some good deals out there for used 240s of the late 80s and early 90s all for around 1500 bucks. Many with power windows. Then you'd have two cars.

Manual windows are a pain with the kids in the back fooling with them... but some say if you ever drive into a body of water, they'd save your live(s).

If you got room probably 1500 dollars would be about the costs of the hassle of doing what you are preposing so get another "brick".

Discouraging but I like the way you think! I just shaved my little Volvo farm down to 2 and I can't add another although I'd love to. I'll just play with all my spares and see what happens.
