Mass Air and Temp Gauge 140-160 1986

The Mass Air Flow seems to be inop. Car hard to idle, but when MAF plug pulled it runs ok(at least while the weather is warm) But the Temp gauge goes to H as soon as the key is turned stays there while the car is in motion. Sometimes at a stop light the gauge goes to C. So, can I fix the temp gauge before I shell out the dough for the MAF or is it a combo deal?

Thanks, Kele'

Re: Mass Air and Temp Gauge 140-160 1986

Had a problem with a pre-1986 240 with temp gauge doing the same. Found out that the default position, no connection to sender, is full hot. Have a look at the yellow wire that connects to the temp sender. It's a PITA because the sender is located on the block under the intake manifold.

There are two senders, the other one talks to the ECU and its wire is not yellow. The temp compensation board is likely on the fritz, too. There is a post from Randy Starkie in the thread on "close to seeing red" by Bubba, Tuesday 9.49a a.m. about by-passing the temp comp board.

Good Luck,

Bob

Classic AMM failure and a working used one should set you back $50-75. Then look into replacing the temperature compensation board on the back of your instrument cluster. Or at least clean the contact pegs.
