Replaced broken timing belt, but still wont start... Help! 200 1984

Just got back from my vacation, so it is time to get the 1984 240DL wagon going again. I posted my problem about two weeks ago... Broken timing belt. So with all the good advice I got here I was able to get the engine gears all lined up and the new timing belt installed. I also replaced the water pump and front seals "while I was in there." But now it wont start at all. It turns cranks fine but I dont think its getting any gas. (BTW, I still have the alternator and AC belts off and the fan out) I've got sparks at the cap and at the plugs. I tested the fuel pump and the relay and they both test ok. The system relay also test fine. The 25A blade fuse by the battery is also ok. So, where do I go from here? I know you knowledgable guys will have some miracle answer to get me back on the road. Any help is appreciated. Keith

Re: Replaced broken timing belt, but still wont start... Help! 200 1989

I had a similar issue after replacing my timing belt a couple months ago. I was fortunate enough to be @ my Volvo mechanic's shop where we were able to install test parts to eliminate possible causes.

My issue ended up being a bad electrical connection under the hood, between the battery and the left side shock tower, and between the fender and the ignition coil @ some sort of relay location. Under a plastic cover I had 4 electrical connections, 3 of which looked like perfect factory crim connections. However, the 4th connection looked like bubba the wonder chimp had got ahold of it.

Here is a list of other items we checked before finding out the real issue.

Speed senor?? (on back firewall somewhere not easy to get to)

Ignition coil and wire

Power regulator?? (next to left front headlight)

ECM computer (under right side dash)

Good Luck

Check to make sure that when the engine is at top dead center(when all of the crank, cam, and intermediate gear marks are lined up properly) that your distributor rotor is pointing to the number one sparkplug wire terminal in the distributor cap. Do you have a timing light? You could check the timing while cranking the engine to make sure it is set right. Check the above and let us know what you find.

Re: Replaced broken timing belt, but still wont start... Help! 200 1984

From all the advice I got on my previous posts about the timing belt, a am relatively certain that the timing belt is on correctly. The timing marks are lined up and the rotor points to number one at TDC. I cannot check the timing becuase I haven't reinstalled the timing cover yet. I want to get the engine to turn over before I put all the accessories back on. I think my problem lies with the fact that I am not hearing or feeling the system or fuel pump relays click when I crank the engine. Both of the relays tested fine, as did the pump. When I turn the ignition on and crank the engine, these relays should trip, correct? Could there be a simple problem in the fuse box, even though fuses 5 and 12 tested ok? Any advice on how to troubleshoot this "no fuel" problem is appreciated. Keith

Re: Replaced broken timing belt, but still wont start... Help! 200 1984

Get a jumper wire and connect fuse terminals 5 and 7 this will activate the intank pump and the main pump, check their operation. Make sure you have gas in the tank. If the pumps don't activate once you jump the terminals then jiggle the wires under the dash near where the relay is, this may clear any resistence occuring in loose connections, in fact on my car the wires leading to the main pump, when tested, indicated proper voltage but the resistence in a loose connection prevented operation of the tired pump....As well take the cover off the relay and visually check that the relay is working.
