I'm changing rotors and pads myself, need advice

Just received my new rotors and pads for front brakes on my wife's 95' 960. Never worked on a volvo before so could use any unpublished advice and pitfalls. Any special tools needed or odd metric socket sizes?

Regards,

Jim

Re: I'm changing rotors and pads myself, need advice

Congratulations!

First off, sturdy jackstands and rubber gloves. Brakes are about THE dirtiest job.

Volvo brakes are surprisingly easy. They use ATE and Girling calipers (don't know about the new models) which are also very common on many Sweedish and German cars. I happen to like IPD's ATE slotted rotors. I would strongly reccomend avoiding anything having to do with opening (removing) the brake lines unless you plan to flush the fluid anyway. I pay my mechanic $40 to flush my fluid rather than do it myself. Once you see the caliper, I believe you will be able to figure it out for yourself (very easy). However, I also reccomend a Bentley repair manual for your car. They are great.

Have fun!!

If you bought anything other than Brembo rotors and Repco (axxis)pads, send them back and start there. You need a 10mm allen socket, Ratchet (obviously) large channellocks, a 12mm or 13mm wrench, and you're there. Torque wheels EVENLY. It does NOT matter if you torque the wheels to a million foot pounds. It DOES matter that you torque them evenly. Check the 1359599 (4) strut rod bushings while you're there.

Re: I'm changing rotors and pads myself, need advice

just did all four on my 90' 240. easiest brake job ive ever done. the book(bently) said to disconnect the lines to remove the caliper but i found if you are careful you can do it without(hang rotors with a piece of wire to the strut). if you remove the lines they take, on 240, a 11 mm flare nut wrench. use a flare nut only, they are almost glued on! also i read on the brickboard about using a bleeder tool called a power bleeder so i bought one and it is the best thing i ever used to bleed brakes with. look up one of don fosters on brakes and he had the link posted. do not forget to torqe your wheels to 85 ftlbs. to prevent warped rotors. good luck you will be amazed at how simple they are.
