Seats and rearend(not yours...the cars:) 200 1980

Hello,

I have an 80 242 with a pair of seats that are very hard on my rearend. I was wondering what years of the 240 seats can be swapped without mods to the seats/rails.

I have an 85 240 and I think those will work but I want to make sure. I also have a 740 but I think I read that those seats are too wide.

My other question was whether or not the rearend will bolt in to the 80 from the 85 because if I'm not mistaken the 85 has disc brakes and a taller gear than the 80 rearend. Anyone know if this is correct? Thanks in advance for saving me and both my rearends. Jon

Re: Seats and rearend(not yours...the cars:) 200 1980

Good to know that the seats are interchangeable throughout the years, I had wondered about that. As my daily driver is a 245 '80 I can most certainly empathasize with the discomfort! OK around town, but on a long trip .... I installed some nice quality sheepskin seat covers, and some extra foam under them and that does improve the comfort, plus protects the seats and looks better. I have kept an eye out for seats when visiting the boneyards, but inevitably they seem to be in pretty poor shape from wear, or exposure to the weather in the yard. I guess you would have to get there almost right away to salvage them.

Re: Seats and rearend(not yours...the cars:) 200 1980

any 242 seats will fit your car. They made 242's from '75-'84.

244 and 245 seats will fit your car, but they don't fold forward. I guess that'd be okay if you never use the rear seat for anything.

As for the rear axle, your car has disc brakes, too. All cars from the 140 series forward do...

As for the rario, your car currently has:

a 3.91:1 if it is a stick

a 3.73:1 if it's an auto

An '85 might have:

3.73:1 if a turbo w/stick

3.93:1 if turbo/auto

3.31:1 if nonturbo/stick

3.73:1 if nonturbo/auto

Therefore, the only benefit if you're looking for taller gears is the nonturbo/stick 3.31:1. BUT your car has 7 fewer horsepower than the '85 B230F. I'd guess it'd be a real dog off the line with those gears.
