Re: stick shift swap question 200 87

I have a "true" 5-spd on my 87 245

- why would you want to install a 5 spd in place of a 4+od??

All the opinion is that the 4+ is the stronger unit.

Also - according to my Haynes manual - you have a lower drive ratio with the 4+.

The 5 spd was only carried by Volvo for a few years - then they went back to the 4+od.

About the only problem I have had with a 4+od is the od started disengaging - after swapping tranny/OD unit, I found out on this board that it was only the "O-ring" kit in the od unit that needed replacing.

I would swap out this 5spd, in a heartbeat, the moment it craters.

You will more than likely need the front section of the driveshaft too. It will be longer/shorter than the M46 shaft.

Re: stick shift swap question 200 87

Yeah, it should bolt to most of the 4 cylinder engines. I don't know about the earlier 240s, but most of the 80s at least, and perhaps into the late 70s.

The problem with the 5 speed is that it--the US version--has no speedometer pickup. The earlier European versions might. You have to have an electric diff pickup for the speedo to work with the 5sp transmission. And an electric speedometer too, of course.
