Engine cut out and won't run 900 1995

Ok, I am back with a new problem. :)
Earlier today when I started my 940 it made a really strange noise and kind of idled roughly. Turned it off & checked the oil level (as my past experience w/ severe oil leak taught me), oil level was fine. So, Ok, I try to start it again, same noise. Kind of like a metallic sounding noise. So I found a mechanic friend, he looked at it and wouldn't ya know it damn car didn't make the noise for him!!! So now Ihave lost my mind, I drive home, while making a lefthand turn it sounds like I run over something metal in the road. I look, I see nothing. Hrmmm.. ok still driving home. My husband & I go out this evening (not very far), once again making a lefthand turn there is that strange metallic running over type of noise. Then BAM - check engine light, car dies and every light on the dash comes on!!!!
Looked in the street, nothing fell out/off of car, all belts are in place and everything "appears" to be fine. But the damn thing won't run, had to push it out of the middle of the road. :|
Sorry this is SO long and "girl-like" but I am at a loss and wouldn't you know it, it is the weekend. New Years Eve weekend!!!!
Please help. :)
You guys have been great in the past.
-Christee

Sounds to me like a broken timing belt...not to worry too much 900 1995

Quick way to check is to open oil filler cap and look to see if camshaft is turning when engine is cranking....non interference four cylinder should be ok.

If camshaft (lumpy things on a shaft) isn't turning, bingo.

You didn't say if the engine would crank when trying to start. Did the engine just quit or coast down? What are the codes[Refers to the Diagnostic Troube Code (DTC)located probably on the drivers side(black rectangle box with one black wire on the outside)] from the check engine light? These codes should give you and idea where to start looking for the problem. If the engine cranks do you get spark at the plugs? Need some additional facts before I can go further. Hope to hear from you soon.

This refers to the DTC for OBD I not OBD II. I'm not sure when the OBD II was used around 95 or 96 I suspect. Anyhow for the OBD I ,insert the black wire with the connector into the 2 socket and press the button(about 3 seconds) and read off the codes. If there is more than one code you will have to press the button one time for roughly 3 seconds for each code. If by some chance your car has the OBD II diagnostics you need more help than I can give you right now.
