CAR WON'T RUN 700 1986

I HAVE A 1986 740 TURBO AND WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND LOST POWER. WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS, I LOSE POWER AND IT SEEMS TO BOG DOWN. I CAN BACK OFF THE PEDAL AND GRADUALLY BUILD UP SPEED BUT WHEN I COME TO A HILL OR OVER THROTTLE IT DROPS ON IT'S FACE AND IT SOUNDS LIKE I CAN HEAR THE TURBO SPINNING BUT NOT WHISTLING.
I'VE CHECK THE HOSES AS BEST I CAN FOR LEAKS, DON'T HEAR ANY AND THE HOSES LOOK GOOD. HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE TURBO IS GOING OUT, BUT NOT GETTING ANY OIL OR THE BLUE BLACK SMOKE THAT HAS BEEN REFERRED TO.
HAVE CALLED AROUND HAVE TRIED TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEMS THAT COME TO ME.
HAD A NEW MUFFLER PUT ON AND HAVE EXHAUST COMING THRU THE EXHAUST PIPE. HAVE CLEANED AND CHECKED THE FILTER. I KNOW AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 8 MILES OR SO, I STOP AND CHECK THE HOSES FOR PRESSURE AND I CAN SQUEEZE THE HOSES TOGOTHER AND IT DOESN'T FILL LIKE THE PRESSURE OF A RADITOR HOSE. DON'T KNOW WHERE THE COMPRESSOR BYPASS VALVE IS OR THE TWO HEX HEAD CAP SCREWS ON THE BYPASS VALVE.
THIS IS MY FIRST TURBO CAR, MY FIRST VOLVO AND I PLEASE WITH IT. NOT LOOKING TOWARDS TRYING TO REPLACE THE TURBO FOR TWO THOUS. DOLLARS IF I CAN HELP IT. I JUST DON'T THINK THAT IS THE TURBO, BUT IT'S NOT WHISTLING LIKE IT USE TO. CAN THE TRANMSISSION CAUSE THIS KIND OF PROBLEM AND CAN I DRIVE IT ABOUT 200 MILES TO TRY AND GET IT TO A SHOP WITH TEARING IT UP W0RST THAN IT IS NOW?

CAR WON'T RUN 700 1986

well since i came across this site by accident while trying to get some overseas information about this car, i wanted to make sure my information was understandable, but from the input, i get more crap about my writing than my problem. i don't claim to be a whiz at this, as a matter of fact i'm just a beginner.
just trying to get my car to run, but since your so concerned about my writing, then you probably didn't have much to offer anyway. Sound like the people i been dealing with now, talking out the side of their mouths and not saying a thing.

To those who choose to help,
Thank you very much, and I did find a bad hose after taking them all off and inspecting them.
First turbo car I've owned and I kind of like it.

I sympathize with you. Alot of responses and replies to your post but not many giving you advice on your particular problem.

Anyway here's my take on your probblem. If you have a hole in any one of your hoses you will definately have a vacuum leak. You can tell from your boost guage. Have you noticed your boost guage needle jumping up and down at idle. Or have you noticed that the needle has changed its normal position at idle. A car with a good vacuum will have a steady needle with a reading of 21 inches of Hg(Mercury). Does the car reach boost when your on the throttle. If your needle never reaches the red portion of the guage and you have determined that there is no vacuum leak and there are no holes in any of the hoses then the turbo is the culprit. You mentioned you don't hear the whinning noise on the turbo. It could mean that the turbo impeller isn't turning much at all. Good Luck!

Number 1, turn off the caps. It is the equivalent of yelling on the internet. You don't wish to yell at those whom you want help from, do you?

The symptoms you describe sound like an induction leak. To check the induction hoses, take tem off and inspect them inside and out. In particular, the discharge hose from the intercooler likes to wear out on the bottom where you can't see it. The 90 degree hose at the throttle body likes t wear out at the outside of the bend.

the hose between the maf and the turbo inlet likes to wear out, and the hose that goes to the blow off valve likes to blow out as well (that one was what a "mechanic" diagnosed as a blown turbo).
Also, the blowoff valve itself can come loose, I had that happen to me once on my other turbo car, i coudn't find the leak on the side of the road, so i ended up disconnecting the wastegate actuator arm so i could drive the car home (left the interstate at 35mph, couldn't get above 20)
out of all the hoses tho, i hope for your well being that its not the maf to turbo inlet hose.
Good luck!

Why don't you make this post to the person with the original question? I don't need the information, and they do.

Why don't you check the attitude at the door.

linux:

I don't think john is showing attitude, just telling you how you are supposed to reply to posts in the forum. Email/Net posts lend themselves to miscommunication.

People here receive updates to their posts ONLY ojne level deep. This means that the person whose post you reply to gets an email concerning your post if they are logged into this site. However, since you replied to Johns post he got the response, not the person who actually needed the help. This means that the person who actually made the post might never know anyone but John had replied.

FYI, I wouldn't reply to any post that used all caps like this guy did... annoying writing that I can't read properly and can't help thinking about in anything other than a yelling tone that bothers me. You and John are better men than me I suppose.

Hope that helps.

-Rick

Thanks for the support, I couldn't have written it better myself. My response was not intended to be anything but helpful. He probably didn't realize that his post was going only to me.
