What needs to be done at 120,000 Miles? 200

Hello All,

Besides planning to take the 89 240 GL to the mountains for retreats. The brick is fast approaching 120,000 miles. What should be replaced so I won't stranded in the middle of now where. I have kept up with the standard maintenance items (oil, tranny, coolant, brakes, plugs etc.) But, things like starters, alternators, ECU, Mass Air worry me at 120K. Thanks for all the suggestions.

-Sven(Gray 89 240 GL)

I too would do the Timing belt if you are coming up on the 50,000 mile life of it. At 120K the rear bushing will be getting ready to start clunking but that wont leave you stranded by any means.
For my Bricks 100K 'birthday' I drained the trani fluid (Manual trani) and the rear gear oil and replaced it I did the same for it's 200K 'birthday'. I think it was at 150K that I did my alternator brushes..no trouble but they were due.
I have my original AAM and ECU (although I just bought one on Ebay as a spare).
Make sure you have air in your spare tire and take the trip.

...in addition to the timing belt replacement, replace the t.b. tensioner at the same time. If it's the original, after 120,000 miles, it's time to retire it.

In general, if it ain't broke don't fix it. But in addition to other postings, I would definitely do the timing belt and front seals if they haven't been done yet (last 80k). And look for leaks basically anywhere, flame trap, valve cover gasket and oil filler gasket. Pay attention to any noises the car might be making such as clunking noises from the front or rear indicating worn bushings( mine were unbelievably shot at 120K). Does it start and run OK? Maybe you need a throttle body service, or a resoldered fuel pump relay. These are just some things I've encountered and also read about here on the board. Good Luck,
Marty

Darrell & Sven,

I'll take a stab at this...

I'm not sure that there is anything that needs special attention at the 120,000 mile service. However, you are due for both the 30,000 and 60,000 mile services.
These entail replacing the air and fuel filters, the cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plugs, adjusting the valves, flushing the cooling system and renewing the brake fluid. It would also be a good idea to inspect the flame trap and replace if necessary.

In my experience, the starters on these cars last forever, and the alternator's brush pack and regulator need to be replaced around 150,000 miles.

Air mass meter failure is usually caused by failure of the "airbox thermostat." You might want to replace this when you do the air filter.
