Engine wiring harness: how tough DIY? 200 1984

The engine wiring harness on my 1984 245 is starting to look kind of questionable. I guess about as expected for 200K miles. I want to replace it before it strands me somewhere; I do a lot of long distance driving.

I know the harness is very expensive for the B23F. No, I don't want to make my own --- I know it can be done, but it's just not something I want to try. How tough is it to install myself? With the intake manifold in place, it's hard to see where all these wires go and what's involved in changing them. I've got the Bentley manual...what I'd really like, though, is a "from the front" description of the challenges involved.

And, with the intake manifold removed, are there any other "while you're at it" things I should consider doing? Perhaps those temperature sensors?

Chris-

All of the other posts give good advise, I would do it with the intake off, and while your under there do the heater hoses and any vacuum lines you see.

I did my 740T in about an hour and a half. I had a friend help me and he brought his 745T over.

It's really not necessary to remove the intake manifold but you can if you want. Start at the firewall and lay the new cable out where the old one goes. Remove and replace connector to connector. The injectors all fire at the same time so the order is not important. The temp sensors and other connectors can be confusing, but take your time and check the wire colors as you go. You might also want to disconnect the battery negative cable to reduct the chance of shorts at the alternator and starter.

Good luck.

I just re-did my 740. One thing I found helpful in addition to labeling with tape is to use a "white out" pen to write on the connectors. That way if the tape falls off you still have something to go by. Also another backup I did was count the # of connections I had to make and as I put on the new wire tally up the results so that I did not miss any. Check out Dave Barton's site also. Good Luck

Chris,

I did this job last year. Just take your time and use masking tape to mark everything to match up to the new harness. The new harness does not identify connectors and the ones for the injectors, idle valve and i think for a sensor under the intake all look the same but if plugged up wrong will most likely cause a no start or worse. I removed the intake to make access more easier and also the fan and shroud to loop the harness under the front of the engine. I would replace or inspect all sensors and repair any other problems that you see. Also the harness for the Ignition module is seperate you might want to inspect this also. Again take your time --i think it took me about 3-4 hours to do

The job is not that difficult especially with the intake out.It is really hard to interchange the plugs even without guidence and as you lay out the harness is pretty self explanatory.
