Did you buy a new 1993 240 sedan? If so, please respond to this. 200 1993

If you did, perhaps you can answer a question that I posed on the 200 group yesterday concerning interior quietness of the final 240, the 1993 model year. Thus far, no one has come forward who actually had a new 1993 240 sedan. The question is: When new, could you hear any engine sounds in the interior of the vehicle, particularly at normal highway speeds? If so, please describe what you could hear. If there was no engine sound in the interior, we'd like to know that too. Thanks very much for your response.

Don't worry so much. Contary to 'popular' belief/price, Volvo is NOT a luxury car! (NMI) 200 1993

Not worried in the least. I'm happy as a clam with my 240. Just trying to learn more about the idiosyncracies of these cars. That's all. As to "luxury", I guess it depends on who's defining the term. I don't like the ride of a Lincoln as well as the 240, so to me riding in my 240 is "luxury". : - )

OK after your previous message I thought your "friend" got to you with the loud car stuff....or the "I thought Volvo's are supposed to be quiet" garbage was bugging you.

Other than the hood thing, get some floor sound deadening materials - choices vary from junkyard goodies to Jacque Whipme space age stuff to expensive stuff.

I use two layers of the JC Whitney stuff with some heavy dense rubber sheeting between the layers - all under the carpet. Sure the floor is quiet but between the enlarged exhaust with Flowmaster and dying input bearing noise in the M46 my car is just loud. Doesn't bug me either!

Was thinking about this whilst driving to the rabbit sanctaury (don't ask) at 60 mph last night. Only tyre noise, heater fan and a slight 'boom' from my cheapo aftermarket tailbox were all that was heard. Mines an '86 but from that year on there were no real changes to motors and the level of soundproofing etc remained the same. Mines a carb model as well and you'd normally expect these to be a bit cruder and noisier.
Incidentally, if your sedan is a '93 then it was probably built some years before it was first registered as I believe the last few years of production were wagons only.

Regards,

Big Rich.

You had to ask... 200 1993

Hi Art,

Tailbox = Rear exhaust section/muffler. Technically, it's called backbox in the UK but many avoid this term becuse of the sexual connotations connected with it, if you see what I mean.
As for the Rabbit sanctaury... Well, I found a pet rabbit that had escaped just outside my house at about 10pm that night. I knocked on a few doors where I knew that children lived) but no one knew who he belonged to. We checked the local paper and found details of a rabbit sanctaury on the other side of town. Having not even so much as a cardboard box we had to take him there. Several days later and no one had claimed him so my wife, being a softy, went and claimed the rabbit.
I've had to lash out £80 on a top notch rabbit condominium and i've built him a cracking little rabbit run.
I must (grudgingly) admit that he's a cute feller and very friendly. Myself and the kids wanted to call him Turbo II after my much loved and sadly departed pet Rat ut head office prevailed here and he's now called Starskey. Sad really.

Regards,

Big Rich.

I know it's not a '93 but My '90 used to be rather loud until I scavanged the hood insulation off of an older turbo model at the boneyard.( mine , like many , did not come with hood insulation new)
The guy didn't even charge me anything for it, clips and all.

Had a brand new '84 245 (still have it, not brand new anymore). Even off the lot it had more road noise at highway speed than many other cars. Has gotten worse over the last 18 years. I don't really notice any engine noise per se until I hit about 70. It's probably drowned out by tire/wind noise and various squeaks 'n rattles from the cargo space.

Your '93 should have better soundproofing and window seals, so it's quite possible that the lack/reduction of road noise simply makes the engine more audible in the cabin. If it really bothers you, I believe that iPd sells a "hood quiet kit" that goes on the inside of the hood.
