bad gas gauge in dash for 740 non-turbo 700

I replace the dash clock this weekend (you have to remove the gas gauge to do this). Well, now my daughter says that the gas gauge does not work (stays on empty- does not move). How does one check the gauge, are they fixable, or is time for a trip to the junk yard?

Unlikely the gauge is shot unless you really manhandled it when you pulled it. Make sure all the screws the tie the gauge to the flexible circuit board on the back are snug and that its hooked up properly.

Additionally, these gas gauges hjave a tendency to "stick" due to the smallest problems. If you overtighten the dash or screws, etc., the needle will stay down and refuse to come up. As many volvo owners can testify, the solution is to "gently but swiftly slap" the cover panel over the left side (that part of teh dash the extends over the console). This will free the needle and it should shoot up to where it should be.

If none of this works you might also want to check teh connectin between the dash and the sender assembly in the tank. They wires between the two hook up via a male/female joint on the back of the driver's side rear wheel well. there are two wires, one for the fuel sender assembly (the arm in th tank that registers gas level and holds teh pre-pump) and the one for the speedometer sender on the rear axle. While your at it, check the ground cable for teh fuel sender... its the lone black wire that shoots off the wire set from teh fuel sender and attaches to a bolt just inside the driver's side rear wheel well (its kinda hidden and tucked away).

Good luck,
Rick
