Fuel Economy/Idle issues 200 1982

Hello All,

I have some issue with my two door 200 series! The gas mileage seems to be getting worse and worse. I have changed air cleaner. Also the idle is irregular and it seems to take a long time to return to normal idle rpm's after giving it gas then letting off. Furthermore when it is at standard operating temp and I give it gas as it returns to normal idle it will almost dies for a split second then return to normal idle. Also if I give it just a little gas the idle will jump up to about 500 rpms above normal and stay there untill I give it a quick pump on the accelerator then it returns to norm idle after the doing the almost die for a split second thing.

I was wonder could it be the air exchanger or vacuum leek. I have look at all hose and don't see or hear vacuum leak. I did find a disconnected hose but upon reconnecting it found no change in problems. Are the fuel economy and idle problems related ???? I hope!!! What should I replace first.

Thanks for all the help this boards Rules!!!! VM

i'd second the pulling & cleaning the throttle body, the inside tends to get some oily gunk buildup over time from the pcv vent/flametrap. just make sure when you pull it to wipe it out w/ carb cleaner & a soft rag, don't spray near the little electrical idle switch, that could cause all sorts of problems. try cleaning up the top plate/fit around the amm & the belows between them while you're at it. the gasket is only worth a dollar & while you have it off, it's a good time to clean the flametrap.
let us know what you find.

Had a similar problem on my 84 245 and it was a combination of things...mostly it was the "air valve" or that is what I call it. Pulled it cleaned it with carb cleaner...replaced it. Smooth as silk. Check your intake hose , mine had worn through in 3 spots and needed silicone and duct tape. Silkier yet.

Perhaps your O2 sensor?

You'd have to check you manual for the spec on it, but when they go bad the symptoms can be like what you describe.

Aftermarket seems to be just as good as OEM for longevity, from what I hear.
