wind noise and big a** mirrors 200 1986

Wind noise sucks.
I have the jumbo (dumbo ears) mirrors hanging off both sides of the car.
I the garage I have a set of power mirrors from an early 80's GLE, they seem to be smaller in size, does anyone have experiance with these? Will they be quieter?
Maybe I should just remove them both and hope for better fuel economey!
thought, comment, bar tabs?

wind noise and the extra 'door seal' 200 1986

I drive both a 1986 244 and a 1988 244. Both have sunroof noise, but the 88 has an additional seal thing on each door. It has a tubular shape and fits on each door upper part between the real seal and the window frame.

If you find a 88 or younger in a salvage yard you might be able to peel off these seals. It takes patience and at least a pocket knife. Mounting is with foam-center mounting tape, and the width may be hard to match.

I got a set, yet to put on due to muffler & smog priorities. The plan is to use 1/2 inch mounting tape after cleaning all surfaces with something really good.

Good Luck,

Bob

Actually I think the opposite is true. Most cars have switched to those big "dumbo ears" because they are more aerodynamic, and make less wind noise. The space between the turbo mirrors and the door just creates wind turbulance, making more noise. I have both types, but I can't comment on the noise because the Turbo is in general much noisier than my 89. (mainly because of a bad sunroof gasket)

While mirrors sometimes contribute to excessive wind noise I have helped a few friends quiet their cars and the usual culprit is air getting under poorly attached windshield trim (sounds like a howl or humming noise)- seal with black or clear caulking under the rubber to prevent air from passing under the trim.

The second most common problem was door weather stripping torn or loose, leading to whistling noises - especially with a cross-wind. You might want to check this as well before you commit to changing mirrors.
