my 240 (year '82) will start, but quits running! 200 1982

I have a problem with my 1982 240 DL (automatic). I can start it, but then immediately it quits. I can repeat this over and over. Sometimes, when I gas it when starting, it will run, then die. I changed the fuel filter and checked for obvious vacuum leaks, etc. Some history on this car: It had sat for about three years and after some work, I got it running. It actually had been running for about 6 weeks when it died and I had to tow it. I would appreciate any suggestions, thoughts, etc. regarding my problem. I resist towing it to a shop, as it seems like it would be a simple thing to fix. Thanks, in advance, Maus

If the starting problem only occurs when the car is cold, I would also check the auxillary air slide. Thats the valve with the two hoses coming off it near your inlet manifold. It has a bi-metallic strip that should be open when the engine is cold, pull off the top hose and look down into the valve, if the hole is closed over then the valve is not working and makes it very hard to run when cold. You can loosen it off with a screwdriver and adjust it. It also pays to sqirt a bit of carby clean down there from time to time to keep things from getting gunged up. thanks for the advise and information. it appears that i have located the problem (thanks to info. sent to me by another member!!). it looks like the problem is due to the MAF, mass airflow sensor. i pulled it off and the car started, ran, but ran very poorly! when connecting the sensor back on, the car immediately dies. i had not realized that this part of the system was so sensitive!! thanks, again. kevin

It would help if we knew what type of injection system you have on the car. Do you have just a hose going to the injector or do you have wires also going to the injector. It makes a difference as to what the cause might be for the engine quitting.

Jerry, thanks for your reply. it has wires to the injectors. i believe that it has L-injection (the one that came after the K-injection). does this help? thanks, again. kevin

I just had that same problem! The first thing you should do it have your fuel pump relays tested....If they are ok then you need to replace the jetronic computer...it's a silver box on the passenger side wall. Note! Do not get a new one at the dealership because they will charge you $750.00 plus labor. if you can, get a used one at a junk yard or a different car....If you need one I have one you can have it for $50.00 plus shipping.....reply if interestid...Thanks volvo240guy@aol.com

With the car off, pull the connector to the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor). Then try and start it. If it starts, runs, but runs rough, you've got a bad sensor. $75 from Internetcarparts.com - depending on the rev code.

I had this exact same thing happen on our 84 244 DL.

hello!! i did what you suggested and voila!! it ran, but ran very poorly, as you predicted. when connecting it back up, it died almost immediately. thanks, again!!! kevin

Check your fuel pump and/or fuel pump relay. Also check your common ignition components (coil, wires, cap, rotor, etc).

i know that the dist. cap is old looking; would a cracked cap cause this starting then dieing problem? thanks for your suggestions. kevin
