Well, because for some reason I hadn't visited Brickboard in quite some time my acount disapeared (heck, I don't even remeber the screen name). Well, I'm back so Hi everyone!
Down to buisness, while I was gone I sold my 69 firebird and bought a 2001 S60 2.4t (lpt) w/ leather, 17" alloys and a few other goodies. God I love that car! I still have my 87 240 dl, I actually sold it to my brother...though he has yet to pay me (so I still own the car). But, what really brings me here is I'm picking up another project. After 4 months w/out a car to tinker on I decided I have to get another toy.
So, I'm picking up an 82 242 Turbo 5spd for 250 bucks. The car is actually in pretty good shape, but needs a wiring harness and the owners are old friends of mine and they just want it gone. So, the wheels (perfect set of turbo wheels) are worth that IMO. What I'm planning on doing to the car is getting a new wiring harness first and gutting the interior. If it runs with just that thats great for me for a bit. I am already planning on rebuilding the motor but maybe with some luck I wont have to for a bit. I want to put an intercooler on the car, but I've noticed IPD isn't selling theirs anymore. Where can I get one?
What cam do you recommend? VX? Basicly I'm stripping the car down, doing a max suspension upgrade, looking to eventually be getting 250-300 hp from the car (heck, it has to be atleast as fast as my s60 is...for now when the S60 R is out I am all over that) and just something that is different. You guys have always been great and I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Nice addition with the S60!
Ooo, 242T. I drive one of those, and the same year too :)
cool, on the good shape of the wheels and it only needing a wiring harness!
There was a guy @ the IPD garage sale selling a 240 intercooler kit for $250.
I think it is now being sold on ebay.
Cam recommendations. I have not had any personal experience than with the stock T cam. I would check out www.turbobricks.org, sign up for the mailing list and figure out what exactly you want to do with that engine.
Supposedly the Phase One that Unitek in sweden sells is a good cam. There are some members on that list with one if I remember right.
On that list you can also read and get information on better engine management systems, and the mLPT concept, which is what your S60 uses. When my Volvo becomes just a toy and not a daily driver I hope to change engine management systems and going to an mLPT engine hopefuly!
Suspension upgrade! gut interior, sweet! MVP in Portland Oregon has been designing custom coil overs for 740 and 240. It does not appear they are selling them yet, but if I was going max on everything that is what I would get! www.mvpvolvo.com
take care
hope this helps!
nice looking car and deal on that 242, hope I have an opportunity to get one of those!

Hey, it feels great to be back and posting away on brickboard again, I felt so lonesome inside! (now that I've got it sending me emails again)
Well, it's a go on the deal (atleast on my end, had to convice my dad to let me use some of his space for a while) hopefully should have the car in two weeks. I just have to make this months payment on the s60 (errr).
Basicly, I have a feeling that the car only needs a few simple fixes to get up and running again, I mean this summer the motor is getting a complete rebuild, hell thats the best part of building cars right?, but the owners who have it now....well they are not bright. Good for me though! As far as the engine managment I don't want to get into something super complicated, actually the less I have to rely on a computer the better. But, how hard (read expensive) is that system? I'm really just looking to build a box on a go-cart kind of car here!
Ahh, feels great to be back,
Thanks,
Doug

First off, have you checked the IPD classifieds for the intercooler?
'$250 b/oThis set up is ready to bolt in. Its all cleaned up, Nice and clean. Intercooler is in very good condition.. Also Have the overboost switch that limits the turbo from spooling up past 10pounds under 3200rpm. All hoses and Elbows are there to complete it. Not spongy.. the pipe the goes to the elbow is $175 from the dealer alone.. You do not have to put the over boost switch on if you want boost all through the rpm range. Payment is personal or Cashiers check. $250 b/0 '

This might help you on that one! I would buy it but I dont need it :P
yea, the injection system on our cars, K-jet (Bosch Mechanical, Continuous Injection) it is not overly complex, and does not rely much on the computer, mainly for air fuel modification with the oxygen sensor feedback. This fuel system is pretty good, supposedly good for up to 220-250 hp, not quite sure on that number though.
For all kinds of turbo information and turbo nuts, check on www.turbobricks.org
Problems with these cars: Engine wiring harness, water leaks, and rust. These are the major ones. If you search online for how to buy a 240 or something along those lines, they should tell you more!
take care
hope this helsp
sorry for the delayed response, I didnt get the reply email I normally do, because I didnt log in.

Thanks luke, I can't belive I didn't think of that. I've been restoring cars of some sort for over 10 years, (12 first-gen-firebirds....god I've done to many of those!) so rust was the first thing I looked for. I've already known about the wiring harness and I have an 87 240 along with my s60 so they aren't super new to me, thought Turbo's and building them are!
Thanks for all the great help!
Should have pictures up in a week or so! It's going to be a project
Cheers,
Doug

Ohhh, I forgot, any specific advice for an 82? I had an 87, but I know some of the problems are different for the pre 85's or so? If I have to put together an intercooler, where and how? Intercooler is a MUST on this car.

Doug,
What I did on my '82 242, was to grab the complete intercooler kit off a 1984.5 245Ti that had been run out of oil. Or, try to. Two of the hoses were missing, so, since I was planning to do the B230 intake on our '83 245Ti, I grabbed the good hoses from that car and slapped them onto my 242 (also wound up grabbing the turbo from the '83 - we'll save that story for another time). Took me 2.5 hours or so to do the intercooler install. But, it's been working fine ever since I did the install. Wish I could say the same about the helicoil job I did on the head. Drill went in at an angle on the lower #4 exhaust stud hole. Needless to say, I've got a head swap in my not-so-distant future. Have a later model B21FT head (from another '84.5 245Ti) that I will send in for rebuilding, and then, will swap it on, and have an exhaust leak free 242Ti.

Well that will be nice, it's always nice to have an exsaust leak free car (years of headers, man do I hear you). Cool, well thats good to know about the intercooler.
Next weekend, I'm going to start poking around junkyards (again)!
