Mechanical Injectors Out to Lunch 200

1980 DL, B21F, K-Jet.
I tried to check the spray pattern of the injectors per Bentley's CI section. I hotwired the fuel pump (30 to 87) with a jumper made according to their instructions and which is in working order. I pulled the #1 injector (they say remove them all), hit the switch to turn on the pump, lifted the sensor plate and got no spray. Not even a drip. Not even the minutest seepage.
I replaced the injector and pulled #2. Same result.
The book doesn't address this condition which makes me think I did something wrong. But I ran the pump this way last fall to do the basic CO adjustment. Fuel welled up in the port like it should and backed off when I adjusted the mixture screw. I don't think it's the jumper.
The only place I deviated from the procedure was not to remove all the injectors at the same time. What difference would this make?
Could the injectors be so dirty that they don't test but the car still runs? Or am I looking at a pressure problem?
The car has 101,000+ miles on it. I think these are the original injectors. Both fuel pumps and filter were replaced at around 95,000 miles. The tank was a little over 1/2 full at the time of test.

But... 200

Well, okay...I am back in the category of bonehead. Not for hooking up the jumper incorrectly but for insisting the jumper was in working order when it was not. All I can say is the light in the switch came on whenever I switched it on but I guess it just can't pass enough current or something. Obviously, electrical is not my forte.
Got that damn fuel pump to work with a good jumper. It sang like Valachi.

Maybe I'm not such a bonehead. I checked Bentley and they never say to turn the key on. So I was doing it right.
Didn't do the test last night. Didn't feel like it. I did try to work the fuel pump both at the fusebox and again at the relay connection. Just to see if if can hear it running, which I can't. But I know it works because the car starts and runs. I couldn't hear it last fall when I hotwired it and I know it was pumping then. because I was getting fuel at the distributor.

This is embarrasing, but... 200

Actually, I think I know the main problem here, that being that I am a bonehead.
I first tried my jumper setup with the ignition off. When nothing happened I switched the jumper off, turned the ignition key on and must have forgot to turn the jumper back on before I lifted the plate. I guess. That's the only way it makes sense. But I believe the ignition needs to be on for that method and it was, mostly, not.
I also may have given the impression that the car is not running. It is. It's just doggy and idles a little rough. This was my reason for wanting to check the spray.
I will do this again tonight only I will use the fuse panel instead of the relay connector.
Also, thanks for pointing out the that the fact that I would have been flooding the cylinders with gas. Under the circumstances I'm glad I was doing the pump thing wrong. I will remove all four injectors on the next attempt.
I am going to run this test correctly!

if the tank is half full and nogas is going in the fuel sytem maybe the rubber hose connecting the auxiliary in tank pump to the fuel gage mechanism is broken split and llowig air to be pumped by the main pump

Could you hear the main pump whine?

To force the pumps to run, I find it easiest to jump fuse #5 to #7. When the fuel pump relay in my '82 quit, years ago, I jumped the fuses with a paper clip and drove 20 miles home. And then resoldered the relay.

None, really, except that you're flooding the $*it outta the engine, and it all that gas washes past the rings and into the crankcase.

Nope. If the pumps deliver fuel pressure and you lift the plate, the injectors should inject.

One test you can try is to disconnect the return line (it runs adjacent to the fuel line near the filter) and direct it into acan. When the pump runs, the fuel should pour forth. Fifth, even.

I would follow the fuel pressure.....a car with that low mileage should not be having injector problem from wear!

Do you have fuel past the filter?

Do you have fuel at the cold start injector?

etc....

Yes get a fuel pressure tester.

Mechanical Injectors Out to Lunch 200

On the K-jet cars I have I just jumper from fuse 5 to fuse 7 with a 16-25 amp
fused jumper lead. This turns on the pumps without the key. I guess somehow you
aren't turning on the pumps with your jumper. I usually do the test with all
the injectors out. I put them each into a clear plastic container so I can see
the patterns. Hope this helps.
