automatic transmission drain question - not flush 700 1990

If I drain the transmission using just the plug, how much fluid can I expect to have to use to refill it? I believe this is an AW70 or AW71 transmision. I'm not going to do the flush technique of disconnecting the return line. I'll just replace the fluid a little more frequently and hopefully that will cycle out the other dirty stuff eventually.

Also, how difficult would you say it is to replace the mounts while I'm down there? There was another thread recently about the tranny mounts and someone recommended doing the tailshaft bushing (is this the output shaft?) I'm pretty mechanically inclined and don't mind getting a little dirty for this job at all.

Yes, I know I should really go and find a manual for my car, which is my other question, which one should I get? They don't seem to have a Haynes manual for a 1990 740.

Thanks everyone!

all done! 700 1990

I jacked up the car and drained it out, and then I refilled a bit of fluid in, about 2-3 quarts. Then I tried to pull the return line in the pan but it seemed to be stuck, so I just went up to the radiator and pulled it from there and connected a tube. All in all it took about 10-11 quarts to get the fluid coming out and looking cleaner, or at least cleaner than before. Man, the old stuff that was in there sucked.

Cost me quite a bit of money to do the flush - $60 for a 2 cases of mobil 1 syn ATF. But I figure it's worth it - next time I won't do a flush, just a drain. I'll probably drain it nearly roughly.

okay okay i'll do a flush! :-) 700 1990

but i'm planning on using mobil 1 synthetic ATF this time around so i guess it'll cost me a pretty penny to do this if it takes 10 quarts... sigh. i'll pick up 11 tomorrow just in case.

Drain: between 2.5 and 3.5 quarts. Flush: around 10 quarts. Flushing is easy: see the FAQ for instructions.

Flushing is easier, you don't even have to jack it up or crawl under. As has been said do it at the rad, just don't do what i did when I disconnected the return line by mistake. What a mess on the garage floor till I got er shut down.

There is only one transmission mount and it's easy to change. They normally do not fail unless leaked upon by oil or tranny juice.

I would leave the rear transmission seal and bushing alone unless it is loose or leaking.

It seemed like it was a couple of quarts the last time I did it.

BTW, it's not that difficult to do the flush. The Haines manual says to disconnect the line at the transmission. However, the easier method is to disconnect the outflow line at the radiator.
