Oil Pressure Warning Light - Help!!! 700

I took a long road trip from VA to KY in my '87 765. Going there was not a problem, but on my way back the Oil Pressure Warning Light came on.

How is this possible? I have an Autometer sending unit connected to an Autometer Oil Pressure Gauge in my A-Pillar Pod, so how is the warning light getting a signal?

I thought that the oil had completely broke down, so I did an early oil change with Mobil 1, 10W-30. The light flickers on and off now.

Anyone have any idea what the issue is or where it's getting the signal from?

Have you replaced your engine wiring harness? That's the first thing I would suspect. Obviously you need to make sure that this is a false signal and that there isn't really anything wrong with your oil pressure.

I didn't replace the wiring harness - had no need to. The wire that sends the signal to the light is capped and hanging in the engine bay.

So how is the light getting the signal?

The light is getting the signal because the wire is shorting out somewhere. This is one of the wires in the engine wire harness that is particularly seceptible to "insulation rot" (specifically, this is one of the wires in the the grey connector near the firewall). Take a look at that connector, I will bet $ that the insulation on those wires is crumbling away (unless the wiring has been replaced already).

Another possibility is a short in the dash itself, but this is much less likely.
