20 mpg? 700 1988

I have recently purchased an 88 760tic wagon it is my first volvo, 158,000 miles. I am very pleased with the car it was well taken care of. I was wondering if 20 mpg is normal for this car. Most of my driving is in the city of Phoenix, AC on all of the time.

Thanks

pretty darn close. Ive gotten as low as 13, but thats stop and go Los angeles traffic, a/c on, and a pretty hard driver, with a manual trans. I average 15 around town. On the highway though, ive gotten as high as 26, a/c on doing 65-70. If I do 75-80 however, a/c on, it can go down to about 23.

I've got a 89 760ti Wagon and have been getting 20-21 mpg, with mostly 70-75 mph highway driving and a little in-town driving, all w/ the AC on.

I average somewhere around 22-24 mpg all told. Some things you might do to increase your mileage include:

- replace air filter
- replace fuel filter (one of the worst brick jobs I know of)
- replace in pump fuel sock
- valve tappet adjustement (this one is a HUGE assist... I got 1-1.5 mpg off this alone)
- replace fuel pressure regulator
- replace spark plugs

good luck,
rt

What is "valve tappet adjustment"?

well, remember, it depends a lot on the traffic conditions. i'm 100% sure there's nothing wrong with my car, yet i only get 15-17MPG in NYC. ah, gotta love good ole NY. :)

It depends on traffic conditions, but NYC is also a different creature entirely. I lived in the city for until just recently, and there is nothing I hate worse than actually driving there... I mean, goddamn why doesn't someone just close the FDR in sections and repave it/fix the damned drainage problems already!

I guess there might be a city in southeast asia that's as horrible to drive in, but there aren't many.

I will say, however, that the valve tappet adjustement was like a miracle for my brick. After having it done the engine was noticeably tighter, with better response, quieter running, and better mileage as well. I talked to my mechanic about it and he mentioned that it's one of those jobs he doesn't think to do unless people request it 9or it is so horrible it obviously needs it) and that generally stops being done after the owner stops getting the "volvo check list tune ups".

what IS valve tappet adjustment? and is it expensive to do?

i like driving in the city, just not in manhattan specifically. everywhere else i can deal with it just fine :)

sounds about right if it's city driving.

i get around 15, but that's driving in tons of stop and go traffic in NYC.

pure highway mileage, 170 miles, i get around 26MPG.

mixed, i get around 19 or 20 so that sounds good.

Ah the magic number of 20. I posted this earlier a couple of weeks ago. I get 20 mpg no matter what, city, highway, AC on or off, windows up or down. Its a miracle, because no matter what I do its always 20 right on the nose. Gotta love it though, I guess in a way its your comprimise for a peace of mind and a sense of safety.
