manual heater controls..totally different to Faq/Haynes...adjustment & ac 900

Hi guys,

ok my 940 is definately weird..and i do mean strange.

trying to fix aftermarket ac added by a previous owner..using mainly volvo stuff..ish..

got working compressor, hot high dide outlet, warm (not hot, just not cold) return pipe..could be charge state..but could also be aircon fighting heater not turning off properly..so went looking...rmembering stuff in faq about this and about vacume motors etc...

ok...tooks dash/centre consul apart (ish) and i definately have air distribution/temperature controlled by CABLES...airdistribution bby 1 cable drive from a cam, heater by two cables in push/pull arrangement all OEM stuff..
no apppreciable way to adjust cables on heater flap..

questions:

1. why have i never heard of this arrangement before?
2. how the ....bleep....do i check the adjustment/adjust it
3. anyone got any other ideas for stuff to check while i take the dash apart...again.....
4. is this car a figment of my imagination cos every time i go to do something on it...it just isnt like the manuals/faq/dealers advice/shop advice...grrr

btw 91 940 2.3 turbo

To my knowledge, ALL the Volvo 700/900 heater cores are controlled by a vacuum-actuated water valve on the engine side of the firewall. To shut off hot water to the core, the controller signals vacuum to the valve, which closes down. To test this, place your hand on the outlet pipe of the heater on the engine side: it should be noticeably cooler than the inlet pipe when the heater control is "off". If not, you need a new water valve.

ok, spent most of today with the entire dash in bits....

this car is seriously starting to hack me off! the vater valve is DEFINATELY controlled by 2 cables from the rotary controller on the dash! the valve is sited on the inside of the firewall at the point where the intake pipe enters. Its working, but not shutting off all the flow..hence the heater core stays on a bit..so god knows what the air con is doing...looks liek a right PITA to change too!

Their is not a single vacume motor in site! the air distribution is controlled by 2 cables and the recirc via an electric motor (nut thats part of an after market aircon setup that has been installed.

Thinking of just selling the car it just doesnt make sense..maybe time to go back to volkswagen who at least make everything the same...

Thanks, i will check, but if so its driven thrui the firewall from cables..which kinda seems to defeat the object somehow....if it isnt i might just post some pics for ppl to ponder...
