I know this is going to be a dumbass question, but would type of boost would a shop-Vac give? would it do anything? I have a craftsmen 5.5 HP vac, and it blows pretty damn good. Would it do anything like boost for the engine?
kevin
P.S. This is a question from a guy that has never worked on a turbo, and has too much time thinking about different ideas.

You're missing half of the benefit. You hook the "blower" end to the intake and the suction to the ehxaust. You get the turbo effect and simulate a "positive restriction" exhaust system. Since its a closed system, it must be pollution free and noise free. If you get a 1954 Electrolux you can hang it on the side window, and those of us who are old enough may mistake it for one of the first generation air coolers (run of evaporation) and the only maintenance will be changing the vacuum dust bag every 3 months or 7 blocks, whichever comes first.

In high school I used to use engine bay ventilator's. A fan in a tube used for boats and such. Any boat supply place will have them. If you want more boost you can put more in a series. You could possibly put a rheostat on one of them to "dial" in your boost, thought of that but never tried it. Also you can make an intercooler out of a heater core, fuel pump, cooler and ice. Will expand more if any body wants. These all worked pretty well. However, check your mix to make sure it compensates enough to where you don't lean out and blow a hole in piston. Otherwise, cheap 5 to 10 horse (w/o intercooler)

"...how to make an inner cooler..."
These are close in design to an inner tube but very different from an outer cooler. And they're also different from a beer cooler.

Let's see. After emptying the beer cooler, and checking that the outer cooler had not exceeded the capacity of either the inner coolor or the intercooler, I decided to compute the power needed for the 5.5 amp ShopVac. Hmmmm. Power equals volts times amps? So, 5.5amps times 120 volts should be the same as 12 volts times 55.0 amps. Where to get the 55 amps? Another alternator? Oh, easy way would be to put two ShopVac things together and let the exhaust make one turn and then the other one would blow into the intake. Been tried before?
Next project - after emptying the beer inner outer cooler again. How to use the heated exhaust manifold to power the air conditioner.
Stay tuned.

5.5 amps times 120 volts equals 660 Watts, which is almost one horsepower.
The real magic to a turbocharger is that it extracts unused and otherwise wasted energy from the exhaust. When this energy is salvaged, the exhaust gas is cooled.
Of course, you could drive a big mutha blower electrically, off a big battery or two, and use it only for those critical moments when you MUST embarrass a rice rocket. The battery could trickle charge.... oh, never mind.
"How to use the heated exhaust manifold to power the air conditioner..."
Sure, an absorption system. Only weighs three or four tons. You could haul it behind you in a trailer.
Just drink the beer and dream.

There was a link posted to some aftermarket intake cone filter that did something like this. It was a cone filter that had a really powerful electric fan attached to it, in fact there was a real video file on the site that showed the thing blowing and floating in mid air. If anyone knows what I am talking about post a link for it again, and if you installed it post an opinion about your results.

sure, but you'll need miles of extension cord!
and if you tried an inverter, you'd use more power out of the alternator than you'd ever create.
Nothing's free.

grrr... maybe i'll just have to put in a battery just for the shop-vac... somehow out-smart pyhsics... :)
