To a small degree the kickdown cable will change the shifts but its only small, it you completly take it off no harm done other then the fact you cant upshift into a higher gear when you need to move and move now. i drove without one for 4 months once never had a problem and the shifting was the smoothest its ever been, so as i say it will change it to a small degree, you might want to try getting a kickdown cable for a non turbo install it and see if you like it though i think its the same one. i once had a turbo tranny that shifts like hell into second even after a full rebuild complete, still did it removed the kicdown cable and bam problem fixed it was only because the transmission will shift at the soonest point without a cable attached so what say you want to go to 4000rpm in first gear, its not going to happen without that cable. it you really want smooth shifts loosen the cable all the way, if this doesnt work pull the valve body do a rebuild on it, if yet it still doesnt work get a new transmission, like the one i had it was the actuall tubing withing the case of the tranny where the fluid moved that was causeing the hard shift no way to fix that.. good luck i have rebuilt 3 volvo transmission 1 aw71 turbo 1 aw70 non turbo and 1 aw71L non turbo. i prefer the aw70 non turbo as it shifts mush better i pulled my aw71L out of my 89 and threw the 70 in there eventually ill get the 71L to shift that way but its takeing time. contact me if ya need any advice.
