Relay to turn on AUX fan manually for cooling at idle 700 1989

Hola Bricksters:
Muchos relays on hand and new ideas keep cropping up!! Now I plan to add a dash mounted switch, that switches on a relay to run current to the AUX electric pusher fan in front ot the radiator. That way, I can turn it on during prolonged idling while in traffic (hot here in Texas) and turn it off during highway speeds. Of course, I would completely bypass the sensor on the radiator. And keep the original fan for the water pump.
Any ideas?? Am I trying to fix what aint broke??
GIA,

I did exactly this with my now departed 245. I bought a fog light relay at the autoparts store and got a rocker switch from a 240 in the junkyard. I would just flip it on when needed. Worked like a charm, but then again, I was the only one who drove the car. I would not trust the average civilian to deal with this manual step.

I suppose you could also tie into the throttle position sensor so that the fan will be on only when your foot is off the gas. Just a thought.

John:
Would you have a diagram of how to run the wires to have both the manual switch and the rad sensor trip the relay to run the current out to the aux fan?
Thanks,

Why don't you install a relay (to operate the electric cooling fan) which is operated by both the sensor in the radiator and a switch for the driver? When I had a Volkswagen Dasher many years ago I found the temperature switch (which directly operated the electric cooling fan) had a short life. To prolong the life of the temperature switch, I added a relay which the coolant switch operated. The relay in turn, operated the cooling fan.

The electric cooling fan on the Dasher was the only fan and operated much more than the electric cooling fan on my Volvo. Since the Volvo also has an engine driven fan, the coolant temperature never rises enough to make the coolant temperature switch close and operate the electric cooling fan.
