Can a 140 tow another car? 140-160

I was considering hooking up a towbar or tow hook to my '70 144 Auto. Do you think it can handle towing a small Fiat Spider? Would drilling holes in the rear bumper to attach a towbar w/ball be good enough? Or do you think the bar should be also bolted to the body somewhere? I don't see any place besides the bumper where a towbar can be mounted since the gas tank is under the trunk.

Yes, a 140 will be able to tow a fiat, especially with a towbar setup. I've towed other 140s and 240s on a trailer - not recommended as your loaded trailer weighs about 1.5 times the wet weight of the car, but it can be done. A spider on a bar shouldn't be a problem.

But for gods sake get a proper trailer hitch. The bumper, and bumber mounts, WILL NOT SUPPORT TOWING. Let me repeat that, THE BUMPER WILL NOT SUPPORT TOWING! It'll at best deform the bumper, and at worst rip either the towball bolts through the bumper or rip the bumper off its supports. You definately _don't_ want that to happen.

The factory or factory-like setups bolt to the frame rails beside the tank.

Which, by the way, is something like what most proper towbars look like, modulo the exact dimensions and bolt hole placement.

On the -73 140 series it'll require drilling a few holes. Oh, and do use some reinforcement plates and pipes to prevent crushing the frame box sections. On the 74- (with the tank closer to the axle, 240-style) and later cars there are holes with captive nuts kindly provided by the Volvo Car Corporation when they built the car. Use them if you can, they're good, strong and safe.

If you're not familiar with proper towbar installation, please have it done professionally. If you're not used to towing, or not used to towing objects this size/weight, please take it easy. Stopping distance will be a lot longer as will the distance needed to get moving (no "slipping in front of something").
If at all possible get someone who has experience with towing to give you some instruction and pointers.

Bram

My dad had a 144 for many years and we towed boat and caravans with it..so yes it will tow ..and very welll too!

but that towing arangement....you will kill yourself...or someone else..

believe me you dont want to mess around with towing (i was in a 4x4 that sheared a bolt on a hitch...not nice!!!) do it right OR DONT DO IT AT ALL! towbars arnt expensive, and if you dont feel up to fitting one...then you wont want to wire one!

so get it pro fitted if you feel you arnt capable,

sorry for the rant, but this is a safety issue yours AND MY FAMILYS if im following you!

The car will tow the Fiat but the bumper will not. You gotta get something
like the factory tow bar that hooks to the frame on both sides of the gas tank.
