240 purchase 200 1987

I'm looking to buy a 240 sedan. Prefer later model ('90 on). Anything I should look out for when purchasing? I have an '87 245 which has been great. Any yrs to stay away from? any special problems I should look out for? If available how are the turbos in this model or is it going to be a turbo money pit?

also changing the tires on my 245. Any reccommendations?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
John

Pirelli P400 - great all round tire for a 240!!!

Excellent dry/wet handling. Fairly quiet and smooth ride. Fair to good in snow. Very reasonably priced for what you get.

I've had Michelin MXV 4's and Dunlop D60 A2's - both excellent tires - but the Pirelli is just as good or better all round and cheaper than either one, especially the Michelin. The Michelin is the quietest and best riding (Pirelli a close second). The Pirelli and the Dunlops are about even in handling (Michelin third), maybe the Dunlops are a hair better but the Pirellis are quieter and better riding. Other people like Yokos and Avids but I have no experience with them...

I would say go for 1991-1993.

My personal preference of models for the following reasons and years:

1991: GM-style (that's GOOD) A/C system, easily changed to R134a refrigerant. Available ABS brakes. Driver's side airbag (1990). Flush front and rear glass trim is quiet and more leakproof. Electronic condenser fan for better A/C performance and engine cooling with A/C on.

1992: ABS brakes standard. Otherwise a 91.

1993: Round toothed timing belt for better longevity. Standard R134a A/C system for cheaper cost of maintenance.

Various trim colors (chrome, matte black) will be found on different years/models.

Try get as late a 240 as you can--a '93 would be good-as long as it was well taken care of-I am "anti-turbo"--if you don't need the turbo power--don't get it--maintenance--more frequent oil changes-not worth it--to me anyway-.
Tires--I run the biggest tires I can on my 240-I think they are 205X14. I hate the thin "stockies". Believe it or not' "Hankook" tires--(Korean--'Hankook'or "Hangook" literally means "One country"--"Korea"-----"Mekook" or "Megook" means "beautiful country--that's the Korean name for the good ol' USA.--There's a story in there as to why in the Korean war-we began to call Koreans--"gooks"-- '-"
"gook" simply means "country"--but I won't go into that now-)
have given me great ride and service--otherwise I fully endorse Cooper tires--- Big "O"s top of the line is good--(I forget the "name"--touring something)--I like their warranty--of course you pay for it--but I have had great success with all 3 of the "brands" I mentioned. My first choice is Cooper. Expect to pay a good chunk. You can always go with Michelins--a bit over-rated for the $$$--I think.
