Swap '82 3-Bar Oil Press Gauge w/'83 5-Bar Gauge? 200 1982

Is there anything that needs to be retrofitted? The 3-bar gauge is always pegged or sitting near the zero. Not much help in indicating problems with oil pressure. Is the 5-bar gauge different in the electronics on its PCB, or is it the same gauge with a different face and the real measuring difference lies somewhere else like the sending unit? Can I plug and play? Thx.

Swap '82 3-Bar Oil Press Gauge w/'83 5-Bar Gauge? 200 1982

I put the five in mine, but I seem to recall someone making the argument that they preferred the three because it gave them finer resolution of reading in the lower end of the scale where it really matters. The theory being that what happens between 3 and 5 bar matters much less than what happens between 0 and 3.

You will need the 5 bar gauge and sender. If you use the 5 bar with your existing sender you will have a gauge that is pegged at 5 bar instead of 3. It is a straight swap otherwise.

What's the difference between the two gauges? 200 1982

...Other than they go to three- or five-bar. Were they designed for different engines? I have a five-bar in my B230F. I'm assuming if I had the three-bar gauge with the appropriate sender the gauge would peg at three. Is the three-bar designed for the six-cylinder engine?

I think it was simply a matter of year. This 3-bar gauge is in an 82 Turbo. I know in 83 and 84 cars, there are 5-bar gauges. Probably freaked out owners complained that the pressure was pegged at the top and kept bringing their cars in, so they changed over to another gauge for newer cars that had a higher range with some empty headroom. Just a thought.

I've heard recommendations that the 5-bar gauge is much preferred to the 3=bar.
SOunds like you might need a new sender either way. Check the parts places.
