Calling all diesel heads 700

I have an injector leaking on my 1987 740 TDI. the injector by the fuel pump (is this no. 1 or no. 6?) is leaking profusely. Can I rebuild this or do I need to get a new injector?

If you pull that thing out dont forget to replace the heat shield with a new one.
I can't remember, but I think you need to watch which way the old one comes out to get the new one in the correct way.

That's it; I quit contributing to diesel posts. 700

Well, I quit contributing to the diesel posts. Mr. Ludwick is obviously the best in the country for diesel questions.

Jesus, I mean, where do you people live? East Freakin' Yahoo USA, where the prices are still stuck in the fifties?

You can't touch, and I mean TOUCH, a rebuilt diesel injector in an actual city like this, for less than $75.

And a new one is out of the question.

And those are Bosch prices, not VW or Volvo which seems to be the only thing that anyone here "knows" about. Even one of the country's biggest and most well-known VW shops here, doesn't X-ref Bosch injectors (since it would harm the price probably).

I guess it's turned into a mail order-and-wait society. Fine if you can stand waiting for everything I guess.

Actually, I'm in south Freakin' Yahoo, USA (Arkansas :-)We have lots of heavy equipment and truck diesel injection shops around here, and overhead is not near as high as most places (there are certain advantages to being 20 years behind the rest of the country), and most of these Bosch diesel injection parts interchange with ones that are used on assorted tractors and dozers so they keep them in stock . (as opposed to the Volvo dealer, who if they would even bother looking, would probably charge about $300 for a new one)

Around here the dealers carry nothing ( for my '90 gas burner either) so buying any new parts usually means waiting 3-7 days for them to order it, and 2 trips to town. So,
I still get most of my diesel stuff new from gapa though, because they will overnight it via Airborne and the cost is still far less than anything around here and it saves me 2, 75 mile round trips to town.

That is #6.
You can get a new Bosch injector from www.gapa.com for about $48
I would go with new over rebuilt.
They will usually rebuild the things at a diesel injection shop for about $35 or so...IF the pintle is OK, if not , the price that they will tack on for the pintle will bring that rebuilt injector to over $100 ( and you won't know until you get the bill...ouch).

You can't properly rebuild it yourself without the equipment to calibrate it.
Do check the rubber return line first for leaks( if it is old , and has been pulled off and pushed back on for any reason, it is probably leaking)
Also try loosening the feed line fitting and retightening. sometimes the things just vibrate a little loose.

Make sure one of the rubber return lines isn't bad and leaking. This is very common. Then I would check tightness of injector and H.P. fitting. See if you can determine exactly where it is leaking. You can get yours rebuilt for $25.00 - 35.00 here in the US anyway. Use new seals upon installation!!

Rebuilts aren't that expensive anyway... less than $100US or something like that. I can't imagine how much a new one would cost.
