Slipping Auto Trans on hills 1991 740 wagon. 700

Okay, My wife just casually mentioned that her transmission is slipping on hills. I flushed it 3 months ago. The car has 150K. It has been regularly serviced. The fluid level is fine. Is there anything this could be other than the need for a rebuild?

Thanks,

Bill

May need to remove transmission pan 700

You may need to remove the transmission pan and see for yourself. I flush my fluids all this while but at one time I did remove the pan just to replace the gasket for ppm. I found some sludge and the transmission filter (a fine wire mesh) was about half blocked. I reverse flushed the filter, cleaned the magnet, buttoned all up and my shifts were better. Flushing doesn't remove any built up sludge. It just got stuck by the filter.

Regards,
Amarin.

Do a cooler line exchange if you did a drain and fill previously. 10-12 quarts. Any fluid that meets the specs if fine. I prefer a Full Syn fluid but a conventional will work just fine. Sam

Flush it again. Did you just drop a couple of quarts from the pan or, "run" the fluid out from a line connected to the return line on the radiator? Now don't laugh....Before you do, ad a quart of K&N Trans Medic and shift it manually for a couple of days. This may dissolve any build causing the problem. Then use a whole case of fresh fluid. Hey, It's cheaper than a .........

Did you drive it yourself to gather information on the symptoms.
Could it be nothing more than a normal downshift to 3rd from 4th as you step on the gas for the hill. There are things outside the tranny that can cause premature downshifting. When and how does the "slippage" occur, speed, gear etc?
It is unlikely (although possible)that the AW tranny in your car is slipping, it is regarded as bulletproof.

First see if the shift lever can be manipulated slightly to stop it from slipping. If so it has to be readjusted. Other than that, it could be a low pressure issue. Which would basically be a good reason to get another trans.

As far as rebuilding goes, I wouldn't bother unless you are totally unable to get a used AW70L, which is what is in that car if it is a non-turbo B230F powered model. Turbo is an AW71. Used ones are cheap (starting around $200) and even the high end of the spectrum sees you getting one for five or six hundred if it is super low miles and a later model. A rebuild is almost a thousand dollars, and a factory reman is more than two thousand. In my opinion, you can usually get two used ones (and installed) for the price of one rebuild.

Hi chris herbst on a busted machine and kilbrid3,

You mention the shuift lever may need adjusting.

What about the downshift cable between the throttle body and the transmission?

Though one imagines you'd have to normally shorten the downshifft cable length over time

Just a idea-r.

What machine is busted that you are on, chris herbst? Just curious.

Mighty Antihistamine. Mighty, Mighty Antihistamine.
